BT Group – Specialist Engineer

The Mobile Operations teams support and manage system and service performance for Mobile Voice and Data services for all mobile brands and MVNOs, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. This full‑time role is 9 - 5:30 (plus on‑call/out‑of‑hours overtime) and is based in BT's Bristol office (3 days a week in office).

The role holder must be a UK National as a Home Office Security clearance may be required.


Key Responsibilities

* Act as a recognised technical expert for a minimum of two systems/services within the team remit.
* Ensure all platforms and services in your control achieve agreed availability targets and that adequate expert support is available 24/7/365.
* Recommend changes to procedures and processes to improve service availability, data integrity and performance.
* Represent and lead Operations responsibility in projects, ensuring design and support model fit for purpose.
* Support and implement the technical strategy, deploying new systems, configuration changes, upgrades and maintenance while maintaining high availability and quality.
* Build, secure and support environments that enable subscriber services to function within the mobile core network, providing support for all messaging systems (SMS, MMS, AOTA, LBS999 and any new services).
* Lead the technical team during high‑impact incident situations, driving restoration of service.
* Produce infrastructure management documentation such as support documents, fault‑finding documents and expert advice.
* Mentor and train team members.
* Ensure ESN requirements are adhered to to meet Home Office audits and SLAs.
* Lead the technical aspects of post‑incident reviews and drive improvement opportunities.
* Participate in vendor operational review meetings, leading on workstreams where appropriate.
* Support messaging changes, ensuring pre‑ and post‑testing and implementation details are documented.
* Ensure supplier cases are resolved within appropriate time scales and provide assistance to suppliers when required.
* Take part in 24/7 on‑call rota and overnight planned work.


Key Skills and Qualifications

* Subject matter expertise for messaging and voicemail systems.
* Extensive operational experience in planning, deploying and supporting SMS, MMS, OTA‑SIM, LBS999 & Cell Broadcast technologies across multiple vendors.
* In‑depth understanding of messaging architecture and technologies.
* Knowledge of mobile data architecture, protocols and services.
* Understanding of security vulnerabilities, hardening strategy and protection systems.
* Familiarity with protocols such as SCTP, SIP, TCP/IP, GSM 03.40, HTTP, MM1‑MM7, Diameter, REST/XML, UDP/TCP.
* Experience with operating systems (Linux, Oracle, Solaris, Windows) and system administration.
* Knowledge of Erlang‑based systems and services.
* Discretion regarding sensitive information and strong communication skills.
* Inclusion of a recognised telecommunications or engineering qualification.
* Experience in 24/7 real‑time service support and telecommunications operating procedures.
* Proficiency in scripting (Unix, Python, Go, Power Automate) and automation mindset.
* Experience with network virtualisation technologies and network cloud.
