Paediatric Dietician

The closing date is 11 November 2025

Looking for someone enthusiastic to join our friendly paediatric dietician team. The role will cover one day a week based either at James Paget University Hospital or The Newberry Child Development Centre. Post holder would work alongside a senior dietician to help deliver the service to children and families within our area. The successful candidate would work as part of our large multi‑disciplinary team covering a range of dietician support and advice working with age ranges from birth up to 19th birthdays.

Main duties of the job

To work autonomously to provide a flexible and comprehensive dietetic service for children within James Paget University Hospital and the local community. To be responsible for providing training and education to patient groups and health professionals. To take an active role in the development of the dietetic service within paediatric diabetes. To provide a specialist dietetic service to the paediatric allergy. To contribute to the nutrition and dietetic service as a whole through participation in service development.

Job responsibilities

* To provide dietary education and nutritional assessment to children and young people in all settings.
* To maintain expertise in paediatric dietetics through expert clinical practice and continuing professional development and to act as the department and trust resource.
* To develop and provide ongoing education and training to medical, nursing and other healthcare professionals to improve nutritional knowledge and promote consistent nutritional messages.
* To develop nutrition and dietetic resources to ensure the availability of up to date and consistent information in a variety of media to meet the needs of the population served.
* To provide dietary education and nutritional assessment to children with food allergy.
* To provide advice, education and ongoing support to all patients seen at consultant led allergy clinics.
* To maintain expertise in allergy through expert clinical practice and continuing professional development and to act as the department and trust resource.
* To manage regular dietetic clinics, which receive referrals from Paediatricians, GPs and Health Visitors, for a range of disorders including food allergy, failure to thrive, faddy eating, obesity and premature infant follow‑up.
* To participate in the development of a paediatric obesity service.
* To organise workload to suit the needs of the patients and/or carers or other health professionals and be able to change planned activities at short notice in response to patients' needs.
* To calculate nutritional requirements, formulate and initiate feeding regimens and/or dietary care plans, choosing the most appropriate of different and often conflicting dietary treatment options and to monitor/review their efficacy/suitability, adjusting as appropriate.
* To organise the safe discharge of enterally fed patients and co‑ordinate the ordering of their equipment for home.
* To have an understanding of ethical issues surrounding enteral feeding and be able to advise accordingly.
* To recommend to doctors the prescription of enteral feeds/nutritional supplements for outpatients and monitor/review their use.
* To prescribe nutritional supplements for inpatients within the specific guidelines agreed by the Trust.
* To gain valid consent to treatment as set out in the trust Consent Policy and negotiate change with patients by breaking down barriers, using motivational skills, to enable them to achieve dietary targets.
* To overcome barriers to understanding and acceptance by using sensitivity and empathy, highly developed interpersonal skills, persuasive and motivational skills to encourage compliance to the most appropriate dietary treatment plan.
* To work in an often‑stressful environment of looking after patients with acute, chronic or degenerative disorders and helping support the patient and carers through the emotional responsibility this can entail.
* To attend child protection case conferences and multi‑agency meetings as required.


Person Specification


Education and qualifications

* BSC in Dietetics or equivalent current state registration.
* Post registration experience with paediatrics.
* Clinical supervisory skills course or equivalent teaching qualification.
* Good oral and written communication skills.
