Job overview

We are seeking a compassionate and motivated Diabetic Maternity Support Worker to join our maternity team. The successful candidate will work closely with midwives, diabetes specialist nurses, and other healthcare professionals to provide care and support to pregnant women with diabetes, ensuring they receive safe, personalised, and effective care throughout pregnancy, birth, and the post natal period.

You will play a key role in supporting women to manage their diabetes, promoting healthy life style choices, and helping them navigate their care pathway. This role involves both direct patient contact and administrative duties to support smooth service delivery.

As a member of our team, you will be professional, safe, and compassionate for women, babies and their families. You will work collaboratively within our multidisciplinary team in an environment that is open, supportive, and empowering.

Main duties of the job

1. Support pregnant women with diabetes during antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal care, under the supervision of registered midwives.

2. Assist with monitoring blood glucose levels, recording results, and reporting concerns to the clinical team.

3. Provide practical support and health education on diet, exercise, and self-monitoring in line with care plans.

4. Offer emotional support, reassurance, and clear communication to women and their families.

5. Work with the multidisciplinary team to ensure timely follow-up appointments, investigations, and referrals.

6. Maintain accurate and timely documentation in maternity records and electronic systems.

7. Assist with arranging and facilitating diabetes education sessions for pregnant women.

8. Support in coordinating care plans, including liaising with community midwives, hospital clinics, and other relevant services.

9. Maintain confidentiality and adhere to safeguarding policies at all times.

10. Participate in training, supervision, and service improvement initiatives to enhance patient care.

Person specification

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING

Desirable criteria

21. Level 2 or Level 3 (NVQ) in health and Social Care or equivalent relevant experience
22. Willing to work towards Level 2 functional skills (Math & English)
23. Care Certificate/working towards

EXPERIENCE

Essential criteria

24. Experience of working with people, ideally in a front-line customer service role.

45. Understands the limit and scope of their job role and the need to only do tasks they are trained to do.
46. Knows when to escalate to a registered nurse when the situation is beyond their scope of practice.

PPE requirements: Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust requires all colleagues to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with our infection prevention and control procedures.
