Job Summary
St Johns Hospice is a 10 bedded inpatient unit based in Balby, Doncaster. Specialist palliative care services at St Johns Hospice provide complex symptom management, psychological support and end‑of‑life care to patients and their families within a welcoming, safe and comfortable environment.
We are seeking a Nursing assistant with formal experience of working within a care environment; you should be passionate about providing high‑quality care and support and want to make a difference to our patients and their families at a difficult time in their lives.
If you don't already have a Level 3 qualification or equivalent experience in a relevant subject, RDaSH is offering this post alongside the opportunity to complete a Level 3 apprenticeship qualification [relevant to your role].
As an apprentice within RDaSH you will gain experience, learn work‑related skills and obtain all the tools needed to thrive.
Main Duties
* Training will be provided to enable the Post holder to work with clients with complex and intensive needs on an individual basis. This may include using a range of medical/nursing equipment to optimise the patient’s health, well‑being and independence.
* Contribute to the assessment, implementation and delivery of individualised evidence‑based care.
* Provide feedback of current patient/service‑user status to appropriate members of the professional team.
* Assist in the promotion and maintenance of individual patient/service‑user activities of daily living.
* Assist the relevant professional during assessment/treatment/intervention where required.
* Support the patient/service‑user to make use of available services and facilities.
* Follow Health and Safety regulations, promote a safe environment.
* Contribute and participate within the Clinical Governance framework by attending team and unit meetings. Where required, act as a link person (acts as nominated representative, attends meetings and feeds back to colleagues) e.g. Health & Safety, Infection Control and audit involvement.
* Report all accidents, incidents/untoward incidents as per policy.
* Maintain awareness of and adherence to all Trust policies and procedures.
* Maintain confidentiality at all times in accordance with Trust policies and national guidelines.

Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
* English and Maths at level 2 or equivalent (GCSE 9‑4, A*‑C or functional skills level 2)
* NVQ Level 2 in a related subject
* NVQ level 3 in related subject or willingness to undertake a relevant Level 3 apprenticeship
Essential Experience
* Demonstrate a keen interest in caring for others
* Previous experience of caring for palliative patients in a clinical setting
* Previous experience of working as part of a team
Essential Knowledge
* Understand importance of maintaining confidentiality
* Awareness of pressure‑area care
Essential Skills and Abilities
* Good interpersonal skills
* Ability to communicate effectively both face‑to‑face and in writing
* Able to support and reassure patients/carers in distress

* Effective communication with patients and relatives who have a life‑limiting illness
Additional Requirements
* Exposure to emotional distress – care of terminally ill patients and patients with progressive disease and their families/carers
