Job Summary
The Medical Devices Safety Officer (MDSO) for North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) ensures that the Trust responds effectively to all manufacturer and MHRA device safety notices. The MDSO works closely with colleagues within NEAS and NEAS Unified Solutions (NEASUS), a wholly owned subsidiary. The role promotes reporting, learning and safe use of medical devices across the organisation and serves as the main expert resource in this area. It links medical device safety initiatives to daily operations, leads investigations of serious device‑related incidents or near misses, and implements changes in procedure, training or culture to reduce recurring risk.

Education qualifications and training
* BSc or HND in a relevant, clinical, scientific, patient safety or engineering subject
* Membership of a relevant professional body
* Master’s degree (or equivalent level combination of post‑graduate study and experience) in medical device, quality assurance or other healthcare technology
* Evidence of continuing professional development in relation to medical device safety
* Possess suitable qualifications and experience to provide professional advice relating to medical device management, legislation and regulatory compliance
Experience
* Evidence of management and leadership skills
* Evidence of working across NHS organisational boundaries
* Experience of working across organisational boundaries and developing multi‑disciplinary professional partnerships
Key Skills and Knowledge
* Technical understanding sufficient to challenge and assure with experience in leadership, systems thinking, and safety science
* Leadership skills to support staff working with a wide range of medical equipment
* Understanding of the principles of risk and incident management methodologies aligned to PSIRF and the patient and staff safety risks that may arise from equipment failure
* Broad knowledge of medical device operational management
* Experience in operation and function of patient‑critical equipment and techniques in healthcare
* Experience of leading or participating in investigations within an NHS organisation
* Experience in the use and operation of a quality management system such as ISO 9001:2015
