Purpose of the role: To lead and support the day-to-day operations of the HGV fleet workshop while actively contributing to vehicle maintenance and repair. This hybrid role combines hands-on technical expertise with supervisory responsibilities, ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant service delivery. The Workshop Supervisor plays a key role in maximising fleet availability, driving workshop performance, and fostering a collaborative, safety-focused team culture. Technical Responsibilities (~50%) Perform scheduled PMI’s, servicing and reactive repairs on HGVs. Ensure all work complies with manufacturer specifications and DVSA standards. Use diagnostic equipment and manual techniques to identify mechanical and electrical faults. Accurately record fault codes and repair actions. Maintain vehicles to meet MOT and roadworthiness standards. Adhere to health and safety regulations, including PPE use and safe working practices. Complete job cards, service sheets, and defect reports accurately and on time. Report recurring faults or safety concerns to supervisors. Maintain a clean and organised work area. Use tools and equipment responsibly and report defects or shortages. Vehicles to be moved and parked in a safe manner. Carry out quality control (QC) checks as required. Attend breakdowns as required, both roadside and at other sites. Supervisory Responsibilities (~50%) Lead, motivate, and support workshop colleagues including technicians and apprentices. Allocate work effectively to ensure optimal productivity and turnaround times. Monitor workshop performance against KPIs including fleet availability, job completion, and first-time fix rates. Liaise with operations to prioritise repairs and minimise downtime. Working together with the Workshop Manager and Workshop Supervisor to implement process improvements and ensure effective shift handover. Promote a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with SHEQ standards. Conduct audits, inspections, and incident investigations, ensuring corrective actions are taken. Line management of the HGV Technicians and other workshop colleagues. Support training and development of workshop colleagues, including apprenticeships and technical upskilling. Manage attendance, conduct, and capability issues in line with company policy. Checking and signing off vehicle inspection sheets to ensure compliance. Essential Requirements for the Role: NVQ Level 3 in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair (or equivalent). UK Driving License. HGV Licence (Class 1 or 2) – desirable for road testing vehicles and vehicle manoeuvring. IRTEC Accreditation – desirable. Vehicle Systems Expertise: Diesel engines, transmissions, braking systems, hydraulics, and electrical systems. Diagnostics: Use of diagnostic tools and software for fault identification. Regulatory Standards: DVSA regulations, MOT requirements, Operator Licence compliance. Health & Safety: Workshop safety protocols, COSHH regulations, and risk assessments. Hands-On Repairs: Proven experience in servicing and maintaining HGVs. Preventive Maintenance: Experience with scheduled servicing and inspections. Workshop Operations: Familiarity with job cards, parts ordering, and workshop coordination. Supervisory Experience: Experience leading a team in a fleet or workshop environment.
