Salary: £25,747 per annum (rising as you progress)
Hours: 37 hours per week
Contract: Fixed-term apprenticeship (up to 48 months)
Location: City of Wolverhampton – city centre and field-based work
Qualification: Integrated Environmental Health Degree

City of Wolverhampton Council is offering an exciting opportunity to train as an Environmental Health Officer through a fully funded Level 6-degree apprenticeship. This apprenticeship is designed for people who want to make a real difference to communities by protecting public health, improving environmental standards, and supporting businesses and residents to stay safe and compliant.

About The Role

As a Level 6 Environmental Health Officer Apprentice, you will join the Council’s Environmental and Regulation Services as part of a structured training programme. Under close supervision, you will support the delivery of essential Environmental Health, Trading Standards and Public Health functions. As your skills and confidence grow, you will progressively take on more responsibility, building the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to become a fully competent Environmental Health Officer. You will not be expected to carry out statutory enforcement activity independently until you are fully trained, qualified, and authorised.


What You Will Be Doing

With support and training, you will learn to:

* Assist with inspections of businesses, premises, land and vehicles
* Support investigations into complaints and service requests
* Provide advice and guidance to businesses and residents
* Contribute to surveys, projects, and public health initiatives
* Assist with monitoring, sampling, and testing activities
* Support enforcement work and prepare reports and basic case files
* Shadow qualified officers during inspections and investigations
* Take part in education, engagement and awareness-raising activity
* Attend training, meetings, and college as part of your apprenticeship
* Completing all elements of your apprenticeship training and maintaining a development log


Entry Requirements

Please note the qualification criteria for the Environmental Health academic programme is set by the University for entry onto the apprenticeship and the City of Wolverhampton Council will be liaising with University of Wolverhampton prior to ensure candidates have met the entry criteria prior to any conditional offer of employment.


Essential

For this apprenticeship programme we require applicants to have achieved the below; GCSE grade 4 or C in English and maths or equivalent. And one of the following admissions conditions which must include the following subject areas:

* A Levels – minimum grades CCC or above
* BTEC Extended Diploma – minimum grades MMM or above (or equivalent)
* Access to HE Diploma (60 credits) of which a minimum of 45 must be at Level 3 (96 UCAS point equivalence, minimum 45 credits at merit)
* Level 3 qualifications that are equivalent in depth to those listed above (e.g., Level 3 Apprenticeship in Environmental Health or related subject area). If unsure, please contact us to check


Essential Information For Candidates

* All applications should include relevant grades to evidence eligibility; documentation will be required. We will be unable to consider applications which do not include this. If you are in your last year of study, evidence of predicted grades is required at application stage.
* Include information on why you want to train within the relevant sector and current knowledge of the sector.
* Non-UK Nationals: To be eligible, you must have resided in the UK for the last three years.
* If you have previous qualifications in a similar area, please contact People Development and Experience Team to check eligibility.

Our working arrangements

All council roles are allocated to either a fixed, field or flexible work style. Some roles are agile which enable and empower employees to maximise their performance and productivity, whilst maintaining a healthy work life balance. Roles with a fixed workstyle work in a fixed permanent council location. Roles with a field workstyle are usually allocated where employees are required to be out working in the community with a minimum requirement for touch down space at any council location. Roles with a flexible workstyle have a flexible base location to meet the needs of the business and employees can work from a mixture of home or any council office, partner/client, or external location, as required to meet service requirements.
