Community Peer Support Development Worker/Part-time- Birmingham

8 hours per week serving the Black African & Black Caribbean communities in Birmingham – £15/hour – 12-month casual worker agreement

About Tackle Prostate Cancer

We are the only patient-led, UK-wide charity representing people with prostate cancer and those who care for them. Through our network of over 140 independent local support groups, we provide education, resources, and networking opportunities.

We understand that every prostate cancer journey is different. That’s why we’ve built a community that listens, offers practical support, and points people towards the information and services that will help them most. Our aim is to normalise conversations about prostate cancer and ensure that no one faces it alone.

Our vision is to grow peer support groups across the country, ensuring that the voices and needs of people living with and affected by prostate cancer are heard.

About This Role

Black African and Black Caribbean men are disproportionately affected by prostate cancer and are at higher risk of late-stage diagnosis. This role will help us connect with communities in Birmingham to co-create culturally relevant, community-led peer support offers.

Working closely with our Midlands Peer Support Development Officer, you will map community assets, listen to community voices, and develop peer support groups that meet the needs of Black people living with and affected by prostate cancer.

Key Objectives

Over the course of 12 months, you will:

* Map: Identify key community assets, leaders, and influencers.
* Listen: Host 2–3 community listening events.
* Develop: Co-design at least two culturally relevant peer support offers.
* Deliver: Launch and hand over the groups to trained volunteer leaders.

What We’re Looking For

* Strong skills in community development and engagement.
* Experience of working with and supporting volunteers.
* Confidence in planning and delivering small community events.
* Understanding of safeguarding and confidentiality.
* Ability to work independently and manage your own workload.
* Commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion.
* Lived experience as a Black African or Black Caribbean person affected by prostate cancer.
* Partnership working experience with health, social care, or voluntary organisations.
* Knowledge of prostate cancer awareness and advocacy.
* Experience in monitoring and evaluating projects.

What We Can Offer You

* You’ll manage your 8 hours per week in a way that works for you and the communities you’re working with. Some evening or weekend work may be required to attend community events.

Expenses:

* We will cover work-related travel and subsistence expenses in line with our policies.

Support:

* You’ll be part of our small but ambitious national team, with regular check-ins and peer support.
* Tell us about a time you successfully engaged a community in developing a project or group.
* Share your experience of planning and delivering events or listening sessions.
* How would you ensure the voices of Black African and Black Caribbean men affected by prostate cancer are heard and acted upon?

Interviews : [TBA]

We welcome applications from all sections of the community, regardless of age, disability, gender identity, marital status, pregnancy, race, religion, belief, or sexual orientation. We particularly encourage applications from individuals from Black African and Black Caribbean communities, specifically for this role.

The post holder will need to complete a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
