Job summary
We are looking for a BMS in Clinical Biochemistry at CDDFTin our very busy Department of Blood Sciences which processes 1500-2000 samplesper site each day.
Nominal Base will be University Hospital of North Durham butyou will be expected to travel to and work at the other sites within the Trustif required. Blood sciences at CDDFT is a very busy laboratory with much tooffer the successful candidate. You will be a proactive member of the BloodSciences Team, excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essentialas is the ability to work within a team processing a high workload ofspecimens. You should have great multi-tasking ability, have excellent organisationalskills and attention to detail and be able to appropriately prioritise urgentwork.
The job description is generic for all BloodSciences BMS staff and all necessary training will be provided but evidence andexperience in a UK laboratory in Biochemistry is preferred. APPLICANTS PLEASENOTE THAT RELEVANT EXPERIENCE SHOULD HAVE BEEN OBTAINED WITHIN THE LAST THREEYEARS
Main duties of the job
Main tasks include:
Maintaining and running automated analysers in accordancewith laboratory protocols, performing QC. Investigating and troubleshooting QCfailures and spurious test results.
Performing manual tests and recording the results
Booking patient samples on to the Laboratory Computer Systemand ensuring the correct test requests are inputted. Centrifuging samples.
Authorising results and forwarding abnormals to ClinicalScientists as required
Managing pending test lists, prioritising urgent work tomeet turnaround times
Answering telephone queries and liaising with other Truststaff and the general public.
Stock control including ordering, receiving and receiptingdeliveries, documenting and organising batches of reagents and performingverification tasks
Assist in the training and competency assessment of new Band4

Clinical Biochemistry at CDDFT processes approximately800,000 samples per year utilising Siemens Atellica systems as well as HbA1ctesting, xanthochromia analysis. The laboratory continuously assesses andimproves its testing repertoire. The LIMS is provided by Clinisys Winpath.
Experience of the above is advantageous but not essential asall necessary training will be provided.
Main Specialist BMS tasks are
Performing complex analyses
Authorising results, reflexing tests as required, referringabnormals to Consultants.
Ensuring analysers maintained, calibrated and qualitycontrolled and troubleshooting any issues
Providing results in a timely manner in emergencysituations, you must be able to prioritise, multi-task, keep calm and haveexcellent communiation skills in emergency scenarios.
Training and supervising Band 4 staff
The department operates a 24/7 shift system coveringdayshifts, late shifts, nightshifts weekends and Bank Holidays which thesuccessful applicant must participate in. There is currently one BMS coveringBiochemistry on each site after 2030 and at weekends.
Cross-site cover will be required at the other sites to meetthe needs of the service.
NB: This is NOT a training post and candidates who are notHCPC registered will not be considered. This is due to the short-term nature ofthis post. The successful post holder will be required to participate in thedepartments 24/7 shift rota after a short period of training.
