Dr. John Braun is seeking a highly motivated, unmatched 3rd or 4th-year medical student interested in a clinical research position in pediatric orthopedics and scoliosis surgery. Dr. Braun is a Pediatric Spine & Scoliosis Surgeon in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital. He completed his MD at Cornell, orthopedic surgery residency at the Hospital for Special Surgery, and a spine surgery fellowship at the Twin Cities Scoliosis and Spine Center/University of Minnesota. His research interest focusses on novel minimally invasive, motion sparing surgery for anterior vertebral tethering.

This role involves close research and clinical collaboration with Dr. Braun and his team and offers opportunities to work alongside residents, fellows, research faculty, and clinical faculty at Massachusetts General Hospital. Clinical researchers can expect to contribute to multiple publications and gain valuable experience to strengthen their application for the orthopaedic surgery match.

Job Duties


* Enroll patients in prospective studies
* Collect patient data through clinical interactions and chart reviews
* Manage Institutional Review Board (IRB) protocols
* Collaborate on and lead retrospective and prospective studies
* Assist with regulatory management of federally funded studies, including budget oversight, correspondence, and quarterly/annual report submissions
* Contribute to writing, editing, and submitting abstracts, manuscripts, grants, and patents

Education

3rd or 4th-year U.S. medical student or graduate

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

* Strong interest in pursuing a career in orthopaedic surgery
* Excellent organizational and computer skills
* Strong oral and written communication skills
* Ability to work independently and efficiently in a team setting
* Strong academic performance
* Statistical experience is preferred but not required

Summary

Job Summary

Following established policies, procedures, and study protocols, provides assistance on clinical research studies, including recruiting, evaluating, and consenting patients for studies; collecting and organizing patient data; scheduling patients for study visits; performing clinical tests such as phlebotomy, EKGs, etc.; maintaining and updating data generated by the study. Additionally, it provides input into determining study subject suitability and input into recruitment strategy. Performs data analysis, interpretation, QA/QC, and assists in completing reports and presentations.

* Assists with determining the suitability of study subjects and acts as a resource for patients and families.
* Has input into recruitment strategies and may contribute to protocol recommendations.
* Administers scores and evaluates study questionnaires.
* Maintains research data, patient files, regulatory binders, and study databases.
* Performs data analysis and QA/QC checks and organizes and interprets data.
* Assists with preparation for annual review and assists PI in completing study reports and presentations.
* May assist with training and orientation of new staff members.
