Co-Founder & CEO @ Clarity Sensors | Ph.D. University of Cambridge

About Clarity Sensors

At Clarity Sensors, we are harnessing breakthrough semiconductor materials and engineering to deliver photon counting X-ray detectors that set new standards in clarity, efficiency, and accessibility. By building the foundation for the next generation of X-ray imaging solutions our mission is to transform diagnosis, safety, and quality worldwide.

As a spin-out from the University of Cambridge’s Optoelectronic Materials and Device Spectroscopy Group, we combine world-class innovation with a bold vision to bring the next generation of photon counting X-ray detectors to market. Following £2.1 million in funding from the European Innovation Council (EIC) we are now building a world-class team to develop the next generation of X-ray detectors that will revolutionise imaging.

We are currently an initial team of 6 and now expanding to accelerate our technology readiness. This is the chance to be part of an exciting early-stage venture, working on cutting-edge technology at the forefront of materials science and detector engineering, driving innovations alongside a world-class team to create X-ray detector solutions that delivery Clarity in Every Scan.

If you’re excited about turning groundbreaking science into real-world impact, join us in shaping the future of X-ray imaging.

About the Role

We are seeking a Research and Development Scientist, preferably with at least 2 years’ post PhD Experience. In this role, you will join an initially small team helping drive our research and development efforts on state-of-the-art perovskite semiconductor materials and their integration into high-performance X-ray detectors. You will be working across disciplines to bridge fundamental research and applied technology development. The role will be full-time in person and initially located at the Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology in Cambridge.

Responsibilities

* Synthesise and optimise our solution-based chemistry protocols to fabricate high-quality Perovskite crystals.
* Fabricate X-ray detector devices using methods such as thermal evaporation, wire bonding, photolithography and other common semiconductor processing and packaging techniques.
* Conduct photon counting X-ray detector characterisation measurements, optimising our chemical synthesis protocols to enhance performance.
* Conduct advanced material processing and characterisation measurements including, Photoluminescence spectroscopy, profilometry, and X-ray diffraction.
* Document and analyse experimental procedures, ensuring rigorous data collection, reproducibility, and reporting of results.
* Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to troubleshoot fabrication and performance challenges.

What We’re Looking For

* PhD in Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or a related field (or equivalent industry experience).
* Post PhD experience as a postdoctoral researcher or in industry is desirable.
* Expertise in perovskite synthesis, and/or solution-based semiconductor synthesis.
* Experience in the development of radiation detector materials and devices/ closely related optoelectronic devices.
* Demonstrated ability to solve complex technical challenges independently.
* Excellent documentation, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
* Strong communication abilities for effective collaboration across disciplines.
* Broader experience in solution chemistry and related field will be considered.

We particularly encourage those candidates typically underrepresented in the STEM area to apply.

* Knowledge of electrical engineering principles related to detector readout and readout chip interfacing.
* Programming experience in Python, MATLAB, or similar languages for data analysis and hardware interfacing.

Compensation

* Competitive Salary (£40,000-£48,000), dependent on experience.
* 33 days holiday allowance, including public Holidays.
* Employee stock options scheme.
* Other benefits expected as we grow.
