Associate Professor (Research and Education) in Statistics and Data Science - School of Mathematics - 106238 - Grade 9

Location: University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham UK

Full time starting salary is normally in the range £58,225 to £67,468 with potential progression once in post to £87,974

Full Time, Permanent

Academic Development Programme

Academic Development Programme - new Assistant Professors will undertake a 5-year development programme, at the end of which they are expected to be promoted to Associate Professor. The programme consists of a variety of development opportunities and the time to reflect and develop.


Background

Applications are invited for an Associate Professor post in the School of Mathematics, in Statistics and Data Science. The School consists of over 70 research active academic staff, around 20 postdoctoral researchers and around 50 postgraduates, with research groups in Algebra; Analysis; Bubble Dynamics; Combinatorics, Probability and Algorithms; Continuum Mechanics; Geometry and Mathematical Physics; Mathematical Biology and Healthcare; Mathematical Data Science; Nonlinear Systems; Numerical Analysis; Optimization; Quantitative Methods for Finance; and Topology and Dynamics. Role Summary

You will contribute at a senior level to teaching, research, and administration, and contribute to academic citizenship, demonstrated through generous, mutually respectful and supportive working relationships with staff and students. Teaching is likely to include development and leadership of major teaching programmes and enhancement of the student experience or employability. Research is likely to involve an established national and international reputation through significant original research work and impact. Management and administration may include departmental/school leadership and university-wide involvement in sustained high-value research, knowledge transfer, enterprise, and public engagement.


Main Duties


Education

* Contribute to the pedagogical knowledge base of the subject; develop teaching resources and/or practice-based research.
* Lead on the management and development of teaching and learning approaches, including innovative digital resources.
* Lead curriculum design at module and programme level to be contemporary, inclusive, engaging and academically challenging.
* Actively engage students in curriculum design and share evidence of what works.
* Contribute to debates about education policy and practice through publications, societies and conferences.
* Develop an external profile through external quality assurance activities related to teaching (e.g., external examining).
* Play an important role in recruitment and admission of students.
* Co-supervise doctoral students to completion.
* Lead development of teaching, learning and assessment policies and strategies.
* Mentor colleagues in the School/Department/College or more widely.
* Advance learning and teaching approaches, including evaluation and research of teaching methods and systems.
* Lead sustained high-value impact in knowledge transfer and enterprise, benefiting learning and employability.
* Undertake own teaching, including planning, delivery, and assessment; ensure practice is informed by discipline-based research.


Research

* Pursue sustained research activity through original work and scholarship; contribute to conference papers, consultancy, and external advisory work as appropriate.
* Contribute to the management of research activities and supervise other research staff.
* Lead successful funding bids and publish internationally excellent research; build a reputation of international quality.
* Supervise and examine PhD students; provide expert advice internally and externally.
* Peer review articles and grant applications for major funders.
* Lead sustained impact activity including public engagement and policy development at national and international levels.
* Develop novel methodologies and techniques appropriate to the research.


Management/Administration

* Lead activities in the Department/School and represent the School on College/University committees or working groups.
* Develop and manage staff and resources in support of major research and/or teaching activities.
* Contribute to the development of strategy for research and learning and teaching.
* Contribute to knowledge transfer, enterprise and public engagement with sustained high-value impact.
* Promote equality and diversity to internal and external stakeholders; use data to identify equality and diversity issues; develop interventions to address them.
* Lead external committees or chair sub-committees on large work areas.
* Manage projects to develop new processes or initiatives; contribute to widening participation and public engagement.


Citizenship

* Identify wellbeing issues within the School/College/University and develop appropriate solutions.
* Take collective ownership of challenges and work with colleagues to develop solutions.
* Mentor and coach colleagues, particularly early-career staff.


Person Specification

* Normally, a higher degree relevant to the research/teaching area (usually PhD) or equivalent qualifications.
* Demonstrated excellence in research, with competence in learning and teaching and management and administration.


Learning And Teaching Requirements

An excellent teaching profile and performance in terms of impact and quality, with teaching scholarship informing practice. Where appropriate, evidence of success in: high national reputation for teaching and learning excellence; diverse teaching methods and assessment strategies; impact on student experience and employability; mentoring and advice to develop teaching skills.


Research Requirements

* High level peer esteem with international reputation and sustained high-quality output; evidence of international impact.
* Excellence in supervision of doctoral students to completion.
* Substantial and sustained external research funding and knowledge transfer of benefit to the College and University.


Management And Administration-related Requirements

* Experience in significant administrative/managerial roles; leadership of initiatives.
* Contributions to management/administration of the Department/School/University.
* Commitment to equality and diversity; ability to use data to identify issues and develop interventions.
