Overview

Job Summary: Pay Per Session £11,000.00. 4 sessions a week, starting 1 March 2026 but open to the right candidate.

Abersychan Group Practice serves approximately 10,600 patients and has provided general medical services for over 40 years. The practice has seven GP partners and is supported by two salaried GPs, one GP retainer, one ANP, four practice nurses, one HCA, two phlebotomists, and a team of receptionists and administrators. The practice participates in a wide range of national and local enhanced services and is a GP trainee practice with one GP trainee and one medical student.


Responsibilities

* Undertake a variety of duties including surgery consultations, telephone consultations, home visits, checking and signing repeat prescriptions, and handling queries, paperwork, and correspondence in a timely fashion.
* Make professional, autonomous decisions regarding presenting problems, whether self‑referred or referred by other health care workers.
* Assess the health care needs of patients with undifferentiated and undiagnosed problems.
* Screen patients for disease risk factors and early signs of illness.
* Develop care plans in consultation with patients and in line with current practice disease management protocols.
* Provide counselling and health education.
* Admit or discharge patients to and from the caseload and refer to other care providers as appropriate.
* Record clear and contemporaneous consultation notes to agreed standards.
* Collect data for audit purposes.
* Compile and issue computer‑generated acute and repeat prescriptions, avoiding handwritten prescriptions whenever possible.
* Prescribe in accordance with the practice prescribing formulary or generically when clinically appropriate.
* Carry out all normal duties and responsibilities associated with a GP in primary care.

* Maintain awareness of and comply with all relevant practice policies and guidelines (prescribing, confidentiality, data protection, health and safety).
* Commit to life‑long learning and audit to ensure evidence‑based best practice.
* Contribute to evaluation, audit, and clinical standard setting within the organisation.
* Contribute to the development of computer‑based patient records and summarising patient records and read‑coding data.
* Attend training and events organised by the practice or other agencies, where appropriate.

Recognise the importance of respecting patient privacy and maintaining strict confidentiality of all patient, staff, and practice information at all times.

* Implement and lead on health and safety and infection control as defined in practice policies.
* Use personal security systems, maintain hand hygiene standards, manage sharps, and ensure safe specimen handling.
* Actively identify and report health and safety hazards and take corrective action promptly.

Person Specification


Qualifications

* Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent) from a recognised institution.
* Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC).
* Completion of Foundation Training or equivalent clinical experience.
* Valid and current professional indemnity insurance.
* Up‑to‑date knowledge of medical treatments, procedures and emerging healthcare issues.


Desirable Qualifications

* Additional qualifications in family medicine, public health or specialist GP training.
* Experience in clinical leadership, teaching or mentoring roles.
* Training or experience in specific areas of interest (minor surgery, dermatology, paediatrics).


Experience

* In‑depth understanding of medical conditions, treatments and patient care protocols.
* Ability to diagnose and treat a wide range of medical conditions.
* Proficiency in using electronic medical records systems and other healthcare IT platforms.
* Strong decision‑making, diagnostic and problem‑solving skills.
* Knowledge of current clinical guidelines and standards.
* Excellent communication skills with patients, families and colleagues.
* Understanding of safeguarding protocols for vulnerable adults and children.


Desirable Experience

* Advanced knowledge in specific clinical areas such as elderly care, chronic disease management or palliative care.
* Expertise in health promotion and prevention strategies.


Additional Criteria

* Eligibility to work in the UK (if applicable).
* A full, clean driving licence (if the role requires home visits or travel).
* Compassionate, empathetic and patient‑focused approach to care.
* Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build rapport with patients and colleagues.

* Ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Disclosure and Barring Service Check
