Position Overview:
This is a new position in the company to support continued growth and become part of the Strategic Solutions Team. The Consulting Systems Engineer (CSE) role will focus on technical, operational, and commercial evaluations and expertise to be the key interface between customer and OEM resources for large and complex sales opportunities. This role involves understanding the different technology and market solutions available to craft sales solutions for customers, advising them on how to manage that technology, where initiatives can be automated, and how AI can influence the options available. Ultimately, the CSE will walk the customer through the commercials of the solution, explain why that option is chosen, how it will benefit them, and the associated cost.
What we’re looking for:
* Demonstrable mid‑level experience in a CSE role.
* Multi‑discipline experience (DCN, LAN, FW, compute, storage, etc.) from a VAR/SI, multiple OEMs, or an OEM with a broad product portfolio. Experience across multiple architectures is key.
* Experience performing a customer‑facing role and presenting is preferred.
* Experience in any inside‑sales representative type function or a commercial build function is a plus.
* Solution‑focused / solution‑oriented approach at all times and resourceful – the candidate will not be expected to be an expert in everything but will seek to find solutions rather than highlight challenges.
Technical Knowledge Markers:
* In‑depth knowledge of OEMs’ products, part codes and software offerings, and the ability to match current/proposed features and functionality to applicable OEM tier offerings.
* Competitive cross‑mapping – thorough understanding of various OEMs’ licensing structures and the ability to map license tiers to other competitors’ offerings.
* Leading client workshops to gather the key data points needed for TOC creation.
* Understanding of hardware lifecycles, end‑of‑life/sales/support, and being able to select OEM and alternative OEM replacements coherently.
* Strong knowledge of historical product/software offerings across the IT industry and insight into the latest market trends and future developments.
* Experience in using OEM quoting tools and quick learning to navigate OEM quoting tools independently.
* Ability to read large Excel workbooks with inventory data, extracting correct data such as HW S/Ns, SW versions, license tiers, etc.
* Ability to translate replacement products into client-appropriate purchasing menu items.
* Competent in collecting ‘hidden’ cost variables such as power, rack unit space, cooling, etc.
Qualifications:
* Experience: Demonstrable experience in pre‑sales, technical consulting, customer‑facing, and/or inside‑sales roles, with a proven track record of solutions selling and consulting.
* Technical expertise: Strong pre‑sales technical skills and hands‑on experience in:
o Data centre infrastructure (compute, storage, network)
o Virtualisation and software‑defined technologies
o Cloud technologies and DevOps
o Core and edge networking
o Enterprise security/cyber security
o IT/OT environments
o AI awareness
* Certifications: High‑level technical accreditations with major vendors such as Cisco, VMware, Dell EMC, HPE, NetApp, and NVIDIA.
* Industry experience: Mid‑level industry experience in client‑side senior roles or within technology integrators or manufacturers, with expertise in applications, infrastructure, cybersecurity, cloud, and networking.
* Consultative skills: Demonstrable consultative technical selling skills, with the ability to rapidly understand customer business problems and propose technology‑based solutions.
* Communication skills: Strong presentation and communication skills, with the ability to engage with senior customer stakeholders, including C‑level executives.
* Education: Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field is preferred; equivalent experience will be considered.
* Commercial knowledge: Terminology – understanding the difference between discount and effective discount, depreciation, net price, subscription vs software, LDOx (x = support, life, SW, maintenance, security updates). Ability to navigate Excel across data input, VLOOKUPs, tables, etc.
