Location : Royal Alexandra Hospital
The job is offered as a full-time post on a 10 PA basis, but applications will be considered from those wishing to work less than full-time. Up to 2 EPA’s may be available to undertake additional activity in the future.
Additional Non DCC (up to 2 PA’s in total – Inclusive of 1 core SPA plus 1 additional non DCC) can be negotiated and agreed between the successful candidate and Management depending on the time required to support professional activities and the needs of the service.
Main Duties
Clinical and Other Duties
Duties will include:
1. Assessment and management of patients referred by GPs to the Medical Assessment Unit
2. Daily ward rounds in the receiving unit (AMU)
3. Daily input to the shared HDU with a novel shared care approach with the critical care team
4. 2 weeks/year of ‘Physician of the Week (on call 8-4) and 2 weeks as the medical consultant based at the VoL hospital. This comprises of ward rounds of the 12 bedded AMU, input to the MAU and 4 inpatient continuing care ward rounds a week. There is a teaching commitment and an MDT
5. Support to the Advanced Nurse Practitioners working within the AEC unit
6. Daily administrative duties and follow up of results
7. Weekly attendance at Acute Medicine Educational meetings and improvement huddles
8. Participation in quality improvement projects and audit work
9. Opportunities to develop a subspecialist interest with appropriate job planning
10. Clinical +/- educational supervision of trainees across all grades with appropriate SPA time allocated
You will also be expected to liaise with Nursing Staff, Allied Health Professionals, Bed Management teams and other specialty medical teams to ensure optimal patient care.
The postholder will be encouraged to actively participate in the development of protocols and pathways within the acute medicine department. They will also be encouraged to contribute to quality improvement work within the Acute Medical Unit.
Qualifications and training
11. MB ChB, MBBS or equivalent
12. MRCP or equivalent
13. Completed specialist training in Acute Medicine
14. A subspecialty interest in Palliative Medicine
15. A subspecialty interest in Palliative Medicine
Desirable :
Certification in FAMUS
Interest in QI methodology
Clinical Speciality Skills
16. Can provide an expert opinion in a full range of presentations to acute medical receiving
17. Demonstrates competency in managing critically unwell patients in level 2 setting
18. Demonstrates competence in the management of a broad range of general medicine problems in an inpatient and ambulatory setting
Skills, knowledge, and aptitude
19. Evidence of working well within a multi-disciplinary team
20. Ability to organise and prioritise complex demands
21. Evidence of teaching and training skills for junior doctors
22. Effective communication skills

Desirable :
Applicants have experience in teaching on, ILS or IMPACT course
