Department: Electrical Engineering Location: Portsmouth Description The Electrical & Automation Engineer is responsible for designing, programming, and supporting electrical and control systems used in CMS2 products. This role involves developing electrical schematics, configuring automation hardware and software, and assisting in the commissioning and maintenance of automated systems. The engineer will work closely with other engineering teams to ensure that all electrical and automation solutions are safe, efficient, and compliant with relevant standards. Key Responsibilities Selection of electrical/electronic hardware for design in accordance with customer requirements and liaison with suppliers when required. Engineering design and production of documentation for hardware and software control systems including schematics and panel layouts. Programming PLCs and HMIs in accordance with specifications and derived requirements. Configuration of automation hardware and software Ensuring designs are fully comply with CMS2 and/or the customer’s requirements including safety and electrical standards. Creation or support of documentation for integrated logistics support. Creation and review of software requirements and specifications. Liaison with production/sub-contractors during manufacture and test of control systems, sub-assemblies etc. Supervision and support to technicians building prototype units. Testing and fault finding of control and test systems, including preparation of documentation. Visits to clients’ offices or sub-contractor/suppliers’ works as required. Analysis, assessment and deployment of modern technology to improve the effectiveness, operation and accessibility of information at CMS2. General activities: Carry out any other ad-hoc duties as required to support the needs of the business. Provide a professional backup service for colleagues during peak times or during absence. Follow company procedures, standards and regulatory requirements. Maintain continuous professional development to ensure knowledge is up to date. Act as an ambassador for the company in all interactions with customers and the public. Skills, Knowledge and Expertise Essential: Degree or HNC/HND in Electrical/Electronic Engineering Strong commitment to health and safety, environment and quality Ability to read and interpret documents such as process engineering drawings, specifications and procedures Structured, logical approach to engineering design Pragmatic approach to tasks Must be able to work efficiently as part of a team and to work under pressure in a challenging environment Excellent attention to detail Flexibility, enthusiasm, self-motivated and able to work well under own initiative Desirable: Experience of using PLCs/Automation controllers - of both hardware and software aspects. Able to use basic test equipment such as, Multimeter, Loop calibrators, oscilloscope. Good hands on electrical skills IOSH Working Safely Apprenticeship in relevant engineering field Previous experience within a manufacturing and defence environment Experience of equipment on-board submarines highly desirable Able to forge strong working relationships both internally and externally 5S / LEAN continuous improvement Some travel to MoD sites in the UK and customer sites overseas may occasionally be required. Other requirements: Candidates must have an existing right to live and work in the UK Candidates must have passed UK security clearance to Security Check level or be able to obtain this level. To gain SC clearance you will normally have had to have been a resident in the UK for a minimum of 5 years. Candidates must be able to obtain a basic security check which will normally require you to have been resident in the UK for at least 3 years.
