Job Purpose

The Canal & River Trust is one of the UK’s largest charities. We maintain 2,000 miles of historic canals, rivers, docks, and reservoirs, along with museums, archives, and the country’s third-largest collection of protected historic buildings – preserving them for future generations. Our waterways are exciting, vibrant places to work.

There are hundreds of mechanically and electrically operated pumps, bridges, and locks on our waterways, combining modern technology with historic structures to ensure longevity. These include pumps for water movement, hydraulic systems for bridge/lock operation, and mechanical/electrical actuators for sluices, bridges, and locks.

As a Mechanical & Electrical Technician on our waterway, you will use your technical expertise to deliver maintenance and repair works to M&E structures, plant, and equipment, protecting and enhancing the network as a valued national asset and providing excellent customer service.

Our Gloucester and South West maintenance team requires a qualified M&E engineer to assist with maintenance activities focused on electrical and mechanical assets, specifically hydraulics. The role involves isolating power supplies/control panels, fault finding within 400v/240v/24v systems, and resolving issues. Many technicians work alone, so appropriate qualifications for safe and legal work are essential.

The ideal candidate will be familiar with mechanical and electrical isolation methods, capable of fault finding independently, and willing to undergo training for ongoing development. The role offers a supportive environment to adapt to our unique work.

Location & Coverage

Based in Gloucester or Worcester, with regular travel along the regional network. Occasional work in other areas of Wales & Southwest may be required. Residing near these areas is essential to facilitate travel.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience

This role supports the Trust’s aims to improve safety and increase usage of inland waterways. Your skills will help maintain our infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities:

* Work safely, ensuring safety for yourself and others.
* Manage volunteers during works, ensuring safety, quality, and satisfaction.
* Support maintenance and repair programs for structures, locks, and plant, monitoring contractor activities.
* Provide mechanical and electrical support and troubleshooting.
* Make recommendations for minor issues and design changes.
* Respond to reactive works, ensuring safety and network availability.
* Inspect, monitor, and report on M&E assets.
* Deliver excellent customer service and respond to inquiries.
* Adhere to Trust values and behaviors.

About You

We are seeking an Electrical Engineer with mechanical knowledge, experienced in fault finding and wiring systems of 400/230/24 volts, ideally with experience in water plants, pumps, hydraulics, or similar assets.

If you have experience working with electrical/mechanical assets such as pumps, sewage works, hydraulics, or automation systems, you may be suitable for this role.

Preferred Qualifications:

* C&G2391/2 or equivalent for electrical testing and inspection
* NVQ3/C&G in Electrical Discipline
* Apprentice-trained multi-skilled maintenance engineer
* Additional mechanical/electrical courses advantageous
* Minimum 3+ years’ experience as an Electrical Engineer
