Product owner - energy

Motability Operations
Energy

Offer description

Description

We're seeking a commercially minded and strategically connected Product Owner - Energy to lead the development and delivery of our energy propositions for EV customers. This role is central to Motability Operations' ambition to reduce the total cost of EV ownership, unlock energy flexibility, and help customers access better, simpler charging at home and on the move. Our vision is that owning an EV can bring down not just the cost of mobility, but also household bills.

Motability Operations will own Europe's biggest EV fleet. You'll lead a team focused on how we can ensure our customers benefit from the huge opportunity this creates in energy. You will design and deliver smart energy products - from monetising our assets through smart charging, to working with OEMs and energy suppliers on emerging technologies like vehicle to grid.

Crucially, you'll also act as a bridge between innovation and scale - bringing commercial insight, delivery discipline, and stakeholder fluency to this evolving space. We expect this role to grow as our EV fleet grows and energy becomes a central part of our proposition.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Roadmap & Vision

Refine and evolve the roadmap for Motability Operations' energy propositions - covering smart charging, home energy offers, flexibility services and system value
Ensure the roadmap reflects both customer opportunity and alignment with MO's electric strategy, commercial goals, and Scheme sustainability
Translate strategic themes (e.g. affordability, inclusion, grid readiness) into testable, value-creating product features

Stakeholder & Commercial Alignment
Act as the central point of coordination between product delivery and commercial strategy in the energy space
Engage internal stakeholders - including pricing, customer operations, finance, and transformation - to align energy propositions with wider product and service offers
Manage external stakeholder input (e.g. aggregators, energy suppliers, policy leads) to ensure partnerships are commercially structured and delivery-ready
Shape and validate the business case for each initiative, balancing value to the customer with long-term impact on the scheme

Backlog Ownership & Delivery
Own the energy squad backlog, maintaining a clear line of sight between sprint-level work and quarterly OKRs
Write high-quality user stories and acceptance criteria that balance customer needs, technical feasibility, and market constraints
Prioritise initiatives based on strategic fit, customer value, regulatory timing, and commercial potential

Measurement & Continuous Improvement
Define and track key metrics, for example energy savings, flexibility revenue, tariff uptake, and customer satisfaction
Use customer feedback, behavioural data, and system modelling to refine proposition design
Collaborate with the Electric Implementation & MI Lead to ensure tracking is integrated into broader divisional reporting

Qualifications

You're commercially curious, analytically sharp, and able to lead delivery in a complex, regulated, and fast-moving domain. You understand both energy and mobility - but more importantly, you understand how to build propositions that work for real people, while aligning with organisational goals.

Minimum criteria:

Proven experience as a Product Owner OR Product Manager in energy, mobility, or connected services.
Strong commercial acumen - able to contribute to or build business cases and evaluate proposition performance.
Demonstrated experience shaping or delivering energy products (e.g. tariffs, flexibility, smart charging).
Ability to manage diverse stakeholders (internal commercial/ops/finance OR external suppliers/aggregators/regulators).
Familiarity with energy systems or EV charging platforms or smart home technology.

Desirable criteria:
Direct experience in flexibility markets or aggregator partnerships or TOU tariff design.
Understanding of energy regulation or network value-stacking (V2X, DSR, etc.).
Experience working with or within a regulated organisation, especially where customer inclusion is critical
