We have an exciting new opportunity for an intermediate Electrical Design Engineer interested in decarbonisation projects to join our Carbon Shift business unit. Our Carbon Shift consulting business focuses on delivering climate action and net zero plans, supported by capabilities in heat decarbonisation, regeneration, Facilities Management, Project delivery, EVs, smart buildings, and renewables. Carbon Shift has developed strong expertise and a client base around net zero and energy transition, and is now expanding into broader climate adaptation and resilience solutions.


Key activities

The postholder will support the development of renewable heat and power projects, focusing on engineering and design development of commercial/utility-scale renewable electricity and heat projects within a multidisciplinary team.

1. Prepare electrical design solutions for retrofit decarbonisation projects, new-build energy centres, and heat networks, from RIBA 1 to RIBA 4 technical design.
2. Carry out electrical load assessments and size switchgear, distribution systems, and equipment.
3. Perform calculations using proprietary software and understand various installation and reference methods.
4. Prepare design models using AutoCAD and REVIT.
5. Utilise application-specific software such as PVSyst and Dialux.
6. Validate simulation models and confirm system design requirements through calculations and engineering analysis.
7. Collaborate with mechanical, structural/civil, architectural, energy, and specialist designers for coordinated designs.
8. Support market research on new technologies and assess their suitability for projects.
9. Assist in technical options appraisals for low carbon systems.
10. Prepare design/functional specifications and contribute to tender documentation.
11. Lead or contribute to Design Stage Reports and customer-facing documents.
12. Conduct Designer Risk Assessments to minimize health, safety, and environmental risks.
13. Ensure compliance with statutory, regulatory, and contractual requirements.
14. Consider physical and environmental constraints in design processes.
15. Handle Distribution Network Operator applications.
16. Work with BIM specialists to provide relevant modelling/design information where applicable.
17. Undertake non-invasive engineering surveys to support design validation.
18. Interpret survey data and incorporate it into designs.
19. Provide technical support during construction and commissioning phases.


Skills, qualifications & experience

* Advanced understanding of low-voltage electrical systems design.
* Good knowledge of British Standards, design guides, and Building Regulations.
* Familiarity with BS and IET technical guidance notes.
* Awareness of health and safety and CDM regulations.
* Ability to produce schematic layouts and single-line diagrams from concept to detailed design.
* Knowledge of lighting, small power, switchgear, data, fire alarm, security, and access control systems.
* Understanding stakeholder involvement throughout project lifecycle.
* Awareness of environmental, cultural, and health & safety issues in system design.
* Ability to prepare draft specifications, stage reports, and tender documentation.
* Proficiency in AutoCAD, REVIT, and Microsoft Office suite.
* Understanding of environmental factors affecting electrical design.
* Excellent written and oral communication skills.
