Role purpose
Mixture of compliance and advisory. Running a portfolio which is a mix of complex returns as a case-handler and more straight-forward cases as the acting manager. The role will also involve assisting on the delivery of advisory work including research on potentially new technical areas. Experience and up-to-date knowledge is therefore essential.
Key responsibilities
* Responsibility for a mixed portfolio of personal tax clients, largely UK domestic but with likely some international elements (e.g. new arrivals, leavers, non-UK trusts).
* Assisting managers/directors/partners on the delivery of advisory work, which will include the preparation of reports on matters such as IHT planning, pension planning pre April 2027 changes, coming to and leaving the UK.
* Preparation and attendance at both existing and potential new client meetings, and ensuring the work is carried out in a timely manner and within budget. Preparing meeting notes and assisting with follow up.
* Responsible for collating all the information needed to prepare the tax return involving liaising with other third-party professionals and on some occasions the clients themselves.
* Must be technically competent in dealing with all aspects of income tax (including National Insurance) and capital gains tax.
* Able to research new technical areas.
* Will be responsible for the preparation of the tax returns for approval by the client and for then electronically filing them.
* Main day-to-day contact on a number of their client portfolio.
* Promptly dealing with routine correspondence received in connection with those clients.
* Ad-hoc assignments in connection with the clients’ affairs – incorporating inheritance tax, income tax and capital gains tax.
* Assisting with s9A enquiries and preparing disclosures under the digital disclosure facility.
* Must be able to prioritise and organise own work to ensure consistently high standard of client care and to meet HMRC deadlines – working without supervision and to show initiative in dealing with clients' affairs.
* Responsible for monitoring own time budgets and chargeability.
* Reviews billing at least quarterly, prepares fee notes for approval by partner and organises delivery to the client.
* Contributes to the development of others within the team which is evidenced by feedback.
Equipment used
* Use of computer CCH packages and SharePoint.
Qualifications/education required
* Minimum requirement to be CTA qualified.
Particular aptitudes / skills required
* Must have a minimum of 4 years private client experience.
* Good organisational skills and will be required to organise their own work to ensure that all deadlines are met.
* Good computer skills including a sound knowledge of Word & Excel are required. (Full training will be provided re use of AI within the firm).
