The University of York is seeking a highly motivated Research Associate (Osteology) to join its Department of Archaeology, a globally recognised centre for archaeological science and bioarchaeological research. The role is based within the BioArCh research centre, which integrates cutting‑edge biomolecular and osteological methods to investigate past human lives, health, and environments.

The successful candidate will contribute to osteological analysis within a funded research project, working with human skeletal remains and applying advanced bioarchaeological techniques. The position involves detailed skeletal analysis, recording, and interpretation, contributing to high‑quality research outputs including publications and reports.

The postholder will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary research team, supporting ongoing projects, managing datasets, and ensuring the accurate documentation of osteological findings. Responsibilities may also include contributing to grant‑related deliverables, participating in academic dissemination activities, and supporting the broader research environment within the department.

Eligibility Criteria

* A PhD (or near completion) in Archaeology, Bioarchaeology, Osteology, Anthropology, or a closely related discipline
* Demonstrated experience in human osteological analysis
* Proven ability to conduct independent academic research


Required Expertise & Skills

* Strong expertise in human osteology and skeletal analysis
* Experience with recording and analysing human remains
* Knowledge of bioarchaeological methods and research techniques
* Ability to manage and analyse research data effectively
* Strong academic writing and publication skills
* Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a research team
* Excellent organisational and communication skills


Salary

£36,024 – £44,263 per year (Grade 6)
