Clinical Fellow in Interventional Cardiology

The closing date is 26 April 2026

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Clinical Fellow in Interventional Cardiology to join the team at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust).

The post will be fixed term 1 year, commencing September 2026.

This Fellowship is designed to provide the skills required to be an independent PCI operator at consultant level, with exposure to complex interventions including CTO.

Main duties of the job

The Fellow will work closely with Dr Farhan Shahid and Dr Sohail Khan (who leads the highly regarded chronic total occlusion (CTO) PCI service at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham). There is a well-established CTO programme within the department. The Fellow would be expected to gain first operator experience in all hybrid techniques and familiarity with the CTO toolbox. Queen Elizabeth Hospital is established as offering a regional complex PCI service and will provide opportunities to work with all PCI consultants during elective and acute lists. The Fellow is expected to fully participate in the PCI programme with commitments beyond lab experience; to complete patient management, meetings, research and conferences. During the term of the post the successful candidate can expect to perform 400 plus PCIs, the majority as first operator. The motivation to contribute to the out of hours PCI service is encouraged.

There are no on‑call or general cardiology/medical commitments attached to this post. The applicant should be aware that this will mean only basic salary will be paid. There will be opportunities to support the StR on‑call rota if there are gaps, but this should not interfere with the day‑to‑day commitments of the fellowship post.

There is also a well‑respected complex PCI service and there will be opportunities to work with the other PCI consultants during elective and acute lists. During the fellowship there will be frequent exposure to complex PCI equipment including for lesion modification (Rotablation, Shockwave, Laser, Orbital atherectomy) and intravascular imaging (IVUS, OCT).
