Expiry date: 16:00, Fri, 17th Oct 2025

Location: Liverpool

Benefits: 30 days holiday + Christmas closure

Duration: 2-year, fixed-term appointment (part-time, up to 1 day per week)

The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) is a world leader in infectious disease research and innovation. Our Department of Clinical Sciences is at the forefront of translational research, bringing together clinicians, scientists, and public health specialists to address major global health challenges.

We are seeking a Clinical Research Fellow to join an NIHR Research for Patient Benefit (RfPB)-funded feasibility study investigating Large Airway Collapse (LAC). This is an exciting opportunity to work within a multidisciplinary research team based in Liverpool, contributing to the understanding and management of this under-recognised respiratory condition.

The successful candidate will have a strong interest in respiratory medicine and clinical research, with a minimum of three years’ post-graduation clinical experience. The role provides an excellent platform for developing research expertise while contributing directly to patient-centred improvements in care for individuals with LAC.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Research and Participant Management

* Assist in the identification, recruitment, and clinical assessment of study participants with suspected or confirmed LAC.
* Coordinate and support study visits, including review of investigations such as dynamic CT and pulmonary function tests.
* Participate in clinical care relevant to the LAC cohort, including CPAP/sleep clinics and complex asthma services.
* Work closely with respiratory consultants, physiotherapists, and research nurses to set up and monitor CPAP.
* Ensure all clinical and research activities are conducted in line with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and ethical standards.

Research Coordination and Delivery

* Support data collection, entry, and quality assurance across study sites.
* Contribute to study governance processes, including ethics submissions and protocol amendments.
* Coordinate the qualitative research and health economics components, working closely with the relevant leads.
* Develop and review patient-facing materials, ensuring clarity, accessibility, and alignment with study objectives.
* Attend and contribute to study meetings and local research governance forums.

Academic and Analytical Duties

* Lead the development of the statistical analysis plan and liaise directly with statisticians and epidemiologists.
* Lead and co-author high-impact academic papers, acting as first and corresponding author where appropriate.
* Contribute to dissemination of findings through conferences, publications, and public engagement.
* Supervise postgraduate (Masters) students and contribute to teaching activities where appropriate.

Professional Development and Leadership

* Maintain full GMC registration and participate in ongoing Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
* Provide mentorship and support to research team members.
* Demonstrate commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion across all aspects of work.

The Ideal Candidate Will Possess

Qualifications & Training

* Full GMC registration with a licence to practise in the UK.
* Minimum of three years’ post-graduation clinical experience.
* Good Clinical Practice (GCP) certification.

Skills & Experience

* Experience working in clinical research or NIHR portfolio studies.
* Clinical exposure to patients with Large Airway Collapse (LAC), Excessive Dynamic Airway Collapse (EDAC), or tracheobronchomalacia (TBM) (desirable).
* Experience managing complex asthma patients (desirable).
* Experience in CPAP therapy or within a sleep service (desirable).
* Understanding of pulmonary function testing and interpretation.
* Familiarity with research ethics, GCP, and trial governance.
* Strong interest in respiratory medicine and/or clinical research.
* Excellent clinical assessment, communication, and decision-making skills.
* Strong organisational skills and ability to balance clinical and research responsibilities effectively.

In Return, We Offer

* 30 days’ annual leave plus bank holidays and additional Christmas closure days.
* Generous occupational pension schemes.
* Government-backed “Cycle to Work” scheme.
* Discounted staff membership at the University of Liverpool Sports Centre.
* A supportive and inclusive working environment.
