Job Description
The Environment Agency is fully committed to having an inclusive workforce that reflects the communities we serve. We seek diversity, embrace it, and live it, for the benefit of our staff, communities, and environment.
We are looking for a highly motivated individual to work alongside our technical lead to manage the waste exemptions regime. Waste Exemption (WEX) charges were implemented on 1 July 2025. While WEX charges will bring environmental, regulatory, and business benefits, they will also increase workload in E&B. We need to establish WEX on a sustainable footing and manage it like other chargeable regulatory regimes.
You will:
* Manage WEX income, business planning, and resourcing. Broker organizational priorities, measure performance, and track outcomes.
* Collaborate with our Ruby Digital Team on the development and enhancement of our online registration service, national customer contact center, and payment center.
* Work with Defra, NRW, trade bodies, and networks to ensure alignment between policy development and operational delivery.
* Support exemptions reform technical work at critical milestones and help build resilience within the WEX team.
Ultimately, you will own all aspects of WEX, supporting the wider team’s work and priorities.
The team
You will join our national Waste Treatment and Transfer team, which leads on biowaste, non-hazardous and hazardous waste, metals, fire prevention, and waste exemptions.
We promote a positive, inclusive, and supportive culture where everyone feels valued. We use evidence, expertise, engagement, and innovation to enhance delivery, influence policy and legislation, and secure resources.
Experience/skills Required
* Ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures, encouraging consideration of diversity issues.
* Knowledge of waste regulation from an operational perspective.
* Understanding of the current regulatory system and its strengths and weaknesses.
* Business management skills.
* Proven track record of delivering outcome-focused work.
* Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure.
* Experience of collaborative work to achieve goals.
We offer development opportunities and appropriate training.
