Apprentice Design Engineer
London Bridge

We’re seeking an ambitious, driven and enthusiastic Apprentice Design Engineer to work in our Building services MEP and Sustainability team based at London Bridge. You will be helping to create designs that directly influence the built environment, energy use and reduction of carbon dioxide emissions on a wide range of projects.
Starting in September 2025, you’ll have the opportunity to study for a Building Services Engineering (BEng) Degree with a leading University while working alongside and learning from professional expertise. You’ll also achieve the Engineering Council’s IEng Chartership Status at end point assessment.
We’ll cover all the costs for your qualification, meaning you can obtain a Degree without the debt! It’s not for the faint hearted as the qualification takes 5 years, but you’ll also get priceless experience working alongside qualified professionals on various projects and with various client groups during this time. You’ll have a structured training plan, access to a buddy and support from fellow Apprentices, giving you the best possible start to your career.
What you’ll be doing
• Accompanying engineers on site visits and surveys to assess and evaluate building services systems and ensure compliance with the relevant standards
• Assist in the design and development of building services systems including heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), plumbing, electrical, lighting and fire protection systems
• Assisting with the preparation of technical engineering calculations both manually and computerised using the appropriate technical software applications
• Using manual and digital techniques to design the systems required for the project, you’ll also assist with the preparation of technical design drawings, schematics, specifications and schedules, as well as monitor progress on construction sites.
• Learning and developing knowledge of the Building Regulations, codes and industry standards related to building services
• Assisting the Sustainability team in the preparation of Energy and Overheating assessments.
• Developing a general understanding of energy efficient design, low/zero carbon technologies, BREEAM and Passive House Design
• Maintaining accurate records and documentation for all designs and projects, and associated document management and control processes.
What you’ll need:
Qualifications
• Minimum of 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade 4/C+ including English, Maths and Science
• A-Levels (or equivalent) in Maths or Science or BTEC or equivalent in Construction or Engineering (merit+)
Knowledge
• An awareness of basic building construction and the built environment (or an appetite for learning more)
• A basic knowledge of building services systems
• A basic knowledge of low carbon technologies
• A basic knowledge of national and local sustainability energy policy (or an appetite for learning more)
Skills
• Communication skills – both written and verbal
• Proficient in MS Office would be beneficial but is not essential
• Experience of CAD / BIM software would be beneficial but is not essential
• Good attention to detail
• Strong organisation skills
• Strong problem solving skills
• Ability to work as part of a team or using own initiative
Eligibility for an Apprenticeship
You must have the legal right to work in the UK as we’re unable to sponsor Apprentices. You will not be eligible for an Apprenticeship if;
• You’ve already got qualifications, in the same subject area, that are at a higher grade than the Apprenticeship you’ve applied for
• You’ve already achieved the skills, knowledge and behaviours required for the relevant Apprenticeship qualification
• You’re in full time education (including undertaking another Apprenticeship) in September 2025
• The Apprenticeship you’re applying for duplicates what you’ve already learnt
