Overview

The Christie NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a substantive Consultant Interventional Radiologist with a special interest in oncological Interventional Radiology and Imaging. The appointee will be based at The Christie’s main site in Withington (home working can be accommodated) and will join a team of 27 Consultant Radiologists. The department performs around 60,000 examinations per year and provides reporting for the regional PET-CT service. The post involves research, teaching, and a commitment to educational and MDT activities.


Main duties

This post is for 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) per week, inclusive of 2.5 SPA, and is a substantive post with on-call commitments.


Responsibilities

Clinical: Be an oncological radiologist with experience in all aspects of cancer imaging; provide expertise in interventional oncology/radiology; chair cancer MDTs. Provide senior input to Interventional Radiology and diagnostic imaging services (MRI, CT, Ultrasound, Plain Film, Nuclear Medicine reporting) and contribute to MDTs across tumour groups. Shared office and PACS/CRIS/PC workstations; secretarial support is shared.

The department currently supports 23 disease-related MDTMs; contribute to at least 2 MDT meetings and develop subspecialty interests. MDT rotas are reviewed annually.

Supporting Professional Activities (SPA) and Job Plan: The Christie NHS Foundation Trust supports 2.5 SPA for full-time employees (audit, CPD, teaching, and research). The exact timing/location of SPA is agreed with the Clinical Director and included in the job plan, subject to annual review and appraisal. Output for SPA should be accountable with measurable outcomes.

On-call and Emergency duties: The post holder will be on the on-call rota (currently 1:26). There is an on-call Specialist Trainee to assist with simple interventions; consultants are called in for complex CT review and MR of spinal cord compression when necessary.

Education and Training: Active involvement with the North West School of Radiology, subspecialty training in Oncological Radiology; support for medical students, SHO/FY2, and non-radiology registrar teaching. Contribute to supervision and education as part of SPA allocation; ensure junior staff and medical students receive support and advice. Comply with College recommendations on Continuing Medical Education and GMC revalidation. Radiology ST teaching is typically one hour per week per consultant.

Research and Audit: Encouraged and supported by the Research and Development Committee; opportunities to engage in translational research with the University of Manchester and the Manchester Cancer Research Centre.

CPD and Job Planning: The Trust supports GMC CPD requirements and provides time/financial support. Job plans are reviewed annually; initial discussion within six months of employment. The plan may be altered by mutual agreement to meet service needs, with annual reviews of educational and supervision components.

Mandatory Training: Essential/mandatory training must be maintained, using allocated SPA time to complete modules. Job Plan Timetable is indicative and confirmed on commencement.

Typical week and PAs: A typical week may comprise 10 PAs: approximately 7.5 Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 2.5 SPA. DCC includes MDT commitments; SPA includes audit, CPD, teaching, and training.

On-call commitments: 1:26 rota with on-call trainee support for simple interventions; consultants cover more complex cases as required.


Qualifications and Experience

Essential: MBBS or equivalent; FRCR or equivalent; MRC(R/P/S/Psych) or equivalent; GMC registration and license to practice (for substantive consultants). Entry on the GMC specialist register via CCT within 6 months of interview or CESR.

Experience: Evidence of thorough training in cancer imaging; track record of productive radiology research; experience in interventional radiology and cancer imaging; ongoing professional development; knowledge of legal/ethical issues; ability to undertake clinical audit; experience teaching undergraduates and postgraduates.

Desirable: Experience in RECIST reporting; innovative practice/service development; recent publications and presentations; PET-CT reporting skills.


Personal Skills

Essential: Strong communication, interpersonal skills, governance knowledge, written and oral communication; ability to work with multidisciplinary teams; flexibility and integrity; ability to work under pressure; awareness of personal development needs.

Desirable: IT skills; experience with invasive procedures (biopsy, drainage).
