Job overview

The post holder will be responsible for providing advanced level engineering expertise, whilst supporting the delivery of high-quality equipment management, within the trust. The post holder will be committed to providing best practice solutions to equipment management. The post holder will ensure effective management of the trials and equipment installations, required for effective operation of the hospital departments. The post holder will also be expected to ensure efficient use of financial resources within the department and assist budget holders with their efficiencies.

The post holder will provide expert level engineering advice and guidance to all members of MED, assisting with the provision of high-quality support to the trust.

Based in the Medical equipment department, you will be expected to support other core areas as required.

Main duties of the job

1. Lead and facilitate the planning, implementation, and evaluation of equipment trials, demonstrations, and loans in line with Trust guidelines.
2. Provide evidence-based analysis and unbiased advice on equipment suitability.
3. Maintain an up-to-date understanding of the equipment market, hospital requirements, and replacement plans.
4. Assess the efficiency and quality of contracts and contractors to support high standards of patient care.
5. Manage and respond to Health and Safety alerts (MHRA), incidents (Datix), and technical complaints.
6. Support and carry out performance verification testing (PPM) on medical equipment.
7. Produce reports and analysis on equipment performance and suitability.
8. Support equipment replacement planning in line with Trust policies and procedures.
9. Promote effective communication with clinical teams, suppliers, and internal stakeholders.
10. Contribute to team leadership, including training and development of junior staff.
11. Support MED management in maintaining compliance with Trust, MHRA, and CQC requirements.
12. Participate in projects, investigations, and departmental initiatives.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

13. To lead and facilitate the planning, implementation, and evaluation, of appropriate equipment trials, demonstrations, and loans, in line with current trust guidelines and protocols.
14. Ensure evidence-based analysis is carried out, providing unbiased views of equipment suitability to the task.
15. Maintain an up to date and informed view of new equipment market, hospital requirement, replacement plans and senior staff equipment related concerns.
16. Assess the efficiency and quality of all new contracts and contractors, toward maintaining high standards of patient care.
17. To ensure staff are apprised of the benefits and considerations of all equipment. (PAQ)
18. Produce reporting and analysis of performance and suitability, as required.
19. Implement and influence equipment replacement in line with developing engineering and procurement procedures and policies.
20. Manage, implement, advise staff on all relevant Health and Safety warnings (MHRA) and all datix incidents.
21. Manage and complete performance verification process tests, on supported equipment as required. (PPM)
22. Be involved in the training and development of junior staff.
23. Act as a role model professionally and specifically regarding liaison with suppliers and staff.
24. Maintain a professional training portfolio in line with trust and CPD requirements

CUSTOMER CARE FOR PATIENTS AND/OR SERVICE USERS

25. Promote and provide an enquiring approach towards service provision, ensuring current and best practice is the basis for service provision.
26. Assist the MED manager and all MED staff in ensuring trust standards are monitored and maintained.
27. Lead in the investigation of technical complaints, incidents, and accidents in conjunction with the MED manager, thereby addressing risk issues and promoting and maintaining high quality levels of support.
28. Always promote a professional and competent approach to staff and patients.

COMMUNICATION

29. Promote and provide effective communication with all members of staff, across all core areas, to provide an effective service within the department.
30. Ensure all relevant legal/regulatory documentation is maintained, completed and distributed correctly and accurately.
31. Be up to date with trust initiatives, developments and changes in all relevant areas. Passing this information on to MED staff as appropriate.
32. Maintain effective relationships with peers, supported staff, external and internal suppliers, leading to an awareness of hospital equipment requirements/replacement plans.
33. Attend departmental meetings as required and actively participate with information sharing and networking.
34. Attend and instigate meetings with suppliers, senior staff etc. as required to provide high quality support service, product awareness and reporting back to department staff as relevant.
35. Ensure that the Medical Equipment Manager is informed of supplier, delivery, trials, loans etc. as relevant to efficient department operation.

PLANNING AND ORGANISATION

36. Assist with the leadership of the MED project/investigation engagement, providing a professional approach and deputising for the MED manager as required.
37. Contribute to the leadership team positively promoting and creating an environment that supports positive collaborative working.
38. Ensure trust policies and procedures are followed.
39. Motivate and inspire through personal example, others towards excellence and best practice in information awareness, analysis and sharing.
40. Co-ordinate the loans, trials and demonstration requirements, ensuring effective use of resources and appropriate involvement of staff.
41. Ensure trust policies and procedures regarding legal and safety management of equipment are followed.
42. Assist and participate in the recruitment and retention process.

BUDGETARY AND RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

43. Assist/advise staff in departments to make effective use of budgets with regards to equipment maintenance/purchase.

TEACHING, TRAINING AND RESEARCH RESPONSIBILITIES

44. Assist in the development of best practice in collaboration with the MED manager.
45. Assist in the education/training relevant to junior staff (Apprentice scheme, NVQ etc.)
46. Ensure new staff members are fully orientated to the department and undertake the trust induction program.

Person specification

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria

47. Degree in biomedical engineering or equivalent
48. City and Guilds HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in electronic, mechanical or biomedical engineering
49. Engineering experience in complex sector with technical responsibility
50. NVQ 5 electronics

Desirable criteria

51. Engineering experience in medical sector
52. Registered with a professional body e.g. IEE, IET, CEng

Experience & Knowledge

Essential criteria

53. An understanding of mechanical, electrical and electronic principles utilised in medical equipment
54. Experience of medical equipment lifecycle management or similar

Desirable criteria

55. Understanding of relevant/current standards for medical equipment/devices
56. A good working knowledge of NHS policy and procedure particularly in the areas of Finance, Procurement, health and safety
57. Basic understanding of anatomy and physiology

Skills & Ability

Essential criteria

58. Experience of medical device asset management
59. Ability to solve issues using analytical reasoning
60. The ability to work effectively with people from various disciplines and educational backgrounds
61. Able to communicate complex technical information to a broad audience of peers, clinical staff, procurement, administration etc. in a clear, concise and effective manner
62. Produce technical reports, presentations, documentation etc. as required
63. Prepared to work in clinical areas where patients are connected to and dependant on medical devices

Desirable criteria

64. Use of specialised equipment for extensive testing/trials on medical devices
65. Highly motivated to deliver the best possible service to clinicians and patients
