BeamGrid Technologies Ltd is a cutting-edge startup at the intersection of RF engineering,
antennas, and next-generation sensing technologies. We are developing novel passive RF
resonator-based solutions for Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) to enable low-cost,
maintenance-free detection of stress, strain, and cracks in critical infrastructure.
Role Overview
We seek a Contract RF Engineer with strong expertise in passive RF resonators for
structural health monitoring (SHM). You will lead fast-turnaround design, simulation,
prototyping, and validation of resonator-based sensors for monitoring mechanical stress/strain
in materials and structures. This is a short-term, high-impact 2-month contract suited to
an engineer who can rapidly deliver technical results.
Key Responsibilities
• Research, design, and simulate passive RF resonators (e.g., split-ring, complementary
SRR/CSRR, spiral/interdigital, chipless RFID, metamaterial-inspired structures) for SHM.
• Build electromagnetic and multiphysics models in HFSS, CST Studio Suite, FEKO or
COMSOL Multiphysics.
• Co-design with materials/mechanical teams for robust integration on metals, composites, and
concrete substrates.
• Prototype on PCB or 3D-printed dielectrics; plan quick design–fabricate–test iterations.
• Execute interrogation experiments (VNA/SDR/custom RF front-ends); perform S-parameter
and resonance analysis.
• Quantify and model frequency shifts, Q-factor changes, and mode behaviour under
applied stress/strain.
• Produce concise technical notes, test reports, and inputs to grant deliverables.
Required Qualifications
• MSc/PhD in RF Engineering, Antennas, Applied Physics or related discipline.
• Demonstrable experience designing passive RF resonators (SRR/CSRR, spiral, interdigital,
or chipless RFID).
• Strong competency in full-wave EM simulation (HFSS/CST/FEKO/COMSOL).
• Hands-on lab skills: VNA calibration, fixture design, S-parameter measurement, resonance
extraction.
• Familiarity with SHM concepts (strain, fatigue, crack initiation/propagation) and sensor
integration.
• Proven ability to analyse experimental data and communicate results clearly.
Desirable Skills
• Experience with RFID/IoT sensing and wireless power/coupling.
• Rapid prototyping (PCB, laser cutting, 3D printing) and basic machining.
• Signal processing or ML for RF sensor data (feature extraction, regression, drift compensation).
• Prior work in startups or Innovate UK/EU-funded projects.
Success Criteria (First 2 Months)
1. Deliver at least two resonator designs meeting target centre frequency and footprint.
2. Fabricate and characterise one lab prototype with documented sensitivity (kHz/με or
MHz/% strain).
1. Provide a test plan & results pack (plots, tables, CAD/EM files) suitable for internal
review and funding reports.
