Applications are invited for a Research Fellow in Cleantech and Industrial Policy, based at the Centre for Environment, Energy and Natural Resource Governance (CEENRG) https://www.landecon.cam.ac.uk/c-eenrg at the Department of Land Economy, University of Cambridge, in the David Attenborough Building. The Fellow will work with Principal Investigator Prof. Laura Diaz Anadon, Chaired Professor of Climate Change Policy. https://www.landecon.cam.ac.uk/directory/professor-laura-diaz-anadon The Cleantech and Industrial Policy Fellow, funded by the Quadrature Climate Foundation (QCF), will work in CEENRG and its ecosystem in Cambridge (including the Conservation Research Institute) and beyond to shed light on the functions played by some of the understudied cleantech industrial policy instruments and their firm level commercialisation outcomes with a focus on Europe. The research conducted by this Fellow will benefit from new computational techniques and data sources and from being in CEENRG, a major interdisciplinary research centre with a critical mass of researchers in this research area of cleantech, industrial policy and policy evaluation. The Fellow will engage in activities that produce new evidence and synthesise the most robust and policy-relevant evidence to inform cleantech industrial policy in Europe and will also engage with technology experts and policy and industrial stakeholders to actively help shape ongoing in policy discussions and decisions. The Fellow will work 90% of the time on Cleantech and Industrial Policy Research in CEENRG, funded by a donation from QCF. The remaining 10% of the Fellow's time will be devoted to engaging with QCF staff and other researchers under a contract through Cambridge University Technical Services (CUTS) signed at the time of appointment. This time can involve engaging in workshops, joining meetings and other synthesis or research related tasks on topics related to climate resilience, energy and policy. Depending on the interests and experience of the person successfully appointed to this Fellowship, the work could focus on particular industrial sectors in which the University of Cambridge has exceptional academic expertise and wider connections through its top entrepreneurial ecosystem and/or on particular European countries. This would complement the expertise in CEENRG with cleantech innovation systems, policy evaluation, and analysis of innovation and commercialization with a focus on the United States. The work of the Fellow could focus on assessing efforts to decarbonise specific sectors such as aviation fuels, steel production, maritime shipping, plastic production, or carbon dioxide removal, depending on the Fellow's expertise and interests and further conversations. Candidates should have a PhD (submitted or nearly submitted at the time of application) in a field relevant to the interface of energy technology, economics, data science and public policy. Examples of relevant disciplines include (but are not limited to): any physical, mathematical, computer or engineering science, with knowledge and/or some experience of energy technology and policy; and/or quantitative analysis including econometrics, statistics and machine learning and related disciplines handling large amounts of complex data. They should provide evidence of potential for research and publication at the highest level, as well as a strong interest in engagement in empirically-grounded, quantitative, and multi-disciplinary research.
