The successful candidate will be an experienced nurse, preferably with oncology experience, with the vision and passion to help optimise high‑quality patient care. As a Band 6 Ward Sister/Charge Nurse you will play an active role in the development of the team, take on managerial duties, and support the ward manager.
Main duties
 * Coordinate and supervise a shift, communicating effectively with members of the multidisciplinary team to deliver high‑quality, evidence‑based care.
 * Advocate for patients and exercise clinical judgement about patients' needs in terms of plans and long‑term goals.
 * Communicate openly with the team at safety huddles, cascading important information that impacts the team and patient care.
 * Participate fully in the day‑to‑day running of the ward.
 * Support the senior sister in the management of the clinical area and support junior staff.
 * Ensure the ward is safely staffed, complete return‑to‑work interviews, support junior staff to develop their skills and confidence.
 * Manage a small group of staff: take charge, ensure annual professional development reviews are completed and essential training is up to date.
Management & Administration
 * Deputise for and support the Ward Manager.
 * Provide management support for junior staff and act as mentor to designated staff.
 * Assess, plan and implement clinical care and maintain associated patient records.
 * Organise daily work schedule, ensuring appropriate and effective skill mix and deployment of staff for patient needs.
 * Be aware of the staff and non‑staff budget.
 * Be aware of health and safety issues and ensure relevant risk assessments are undertaken.
 * Report and record all accidents and complaints according to the agreed policy and investigate compassionately.
 * Ensure all trust policies and procedures are adhered to and new ones implemented as necessary.
 * Regularly liaise and report to the Department Manager/Senior Nursing team on unit affairs and staff development.
 * Ensure each designated staff member participates in a personal development plan and act to maximise the potential of others.
 * Assist in nursing recruitment process when required.
 * Take a progressive approach to the management of short and long‑term sickness/absence in collaboration with the Department Manager/Senior Nursing team.
Training & Education
 * Complete the Ward Introductory Pack and Preceptor pack.
 * Complete relevant in‑house level 1 and level 2 IV training programmes and ensure regular updates.
 * Participate in and undertake research and audit which will influence practice.
 * Be up to date in all IV training programmes, including annual updates, and be competent in all areas of clinical practice including assessment of critically ill patients and performing ECGs.
 * Attend all mandatory study days.
Professional Responsibilities
 * Act as a resource giving advice and support to nursing staff regarding emergency admissions and associated issues.
 * Liaise closely with the medical team and other members of the MDT to promote the highest standard of care.
 * Develop and maintain a professional interest in all aspects of nursing and associated research.
 * Highlight areas of improvement/development within the department and undertake relevant projects.
 * Demonstrate the agreed set of values and be accountable for own attitude and behaviour.

Person Specification – Essential
 * RGN Level 1
 * Degree or Diploma in Nursing Studies
 * Post‑registration Certificate in Cancer or equivalent
 * Teaching & assessing certificate or equivalent
 * Oncology experience or emergency care
 * Excellent communication skills

 * Excellent assessment skills
 * Ability to deliver a high quality of care
 * Computer literacy
