Medical Secretary
Job overview
We are recruiting a Medical Secretary at Heath Lane Hospital, based in the Sandwell locality. The role supports Consultant Psychiatrists and their medical team, providing efficient secretarial support.
Main duties
You will work independently and as part of a team, exercising judgement to prioritise and coordinate your workload. Core responsibilities include:
* Maintaining up‑to‑date patient medical records
* Booking appointments and coordinating clinics and home visits
* Liaising with wards regarding inpatients
* Completing discharge summaries promptly
* Using computerised systems – Microsoft Office, Outlook and patient administration systems such as RIO – to input referrals and make appointments
Qualifications
* GCSE English Grade C or above
* RSA Level 2/3 typing qualification or equivalent
* AMSPAR (or equivalent)
Experience
* Previous experience in a healthcare environment with secretarial duties
* Knowledge of patient information systems is advantageous
* Proficiency in MS Office essential
Pay and contracts
Most NHS roles are paid under NHS Agenda for Change. Starting pay is within the advertised band, with progression through annual increments. Medical and Very Senior Manager roles follow separate national pay frameworks.
Standards and checks
* Clinical posts up to and including Band 4 require the Care Certificate. One will be supported to complete it in post if not already achieved.
* Some roles require a Standard or Enhanced DBS check under part V of the Police Act 1997.
