About the Role
You will support pupils aged 5–16 with SEMH needs, Autism, trauma backgrounds, and school-refusing behaviours. Much of your work will involve building strong rapport and trust with pupils who may find school overwhelming or who have disengaged from education due to past experiences.
You will play a key role in:
1. Helping pupils regulate emotions during moments of distress
2. Re-engaging pupils who refuse learning or avoid the classroom
3. Providing stability and reassurance for children who struggle to trust adults
Key Responsibilities
4. Provide personalised, relationship-based support to pupils with SEMH, Autism, trauma backgrounds, and school refusal behaviours.
5. Build consistent, trusting relationships — becoming a safe adult for pupils who struggle with attachment or authority.
6. Use trauma-informed, restorative, and behaviour de-escalation strategies to support emotional regulation.
7. Assist in implementing behaviour plans, regulation strategies, and re-engagement interventions.
8. Encourage resilience, positive communication, and pro-social decision-making.
9. Work collaboratively with SENCOs, therapists, and external agencies.
10. Record pupil progress and observations, feeding back to staff and families.
11. Contribute to a safe, structured and nurturing learning environment.
Ideal Candidate
12. Degree (or studying) in Criminology, Psychology, Youth Work, Sociology, Social Care, or related field is desirable but not essential.
13. Experience working or volunteering with young people, especially those exhibiting challenging behaviour or disengagement from education.
14. Resilient, calm and emotionally regulated — able to maintain boundaries with empathy.
15. Strong communication, active listening and problem-solving skills.
16. Enhanced DBS, or willingness to apply.
