Key Responsibilities
* Assist in the provision of care to patients, supported by a Registered Nurse (RN) or Operating Department Practitioner (ODP).
* Carry out assigned duties that maintain hygiene, orderliness and safety of the ward/department environment.
* Fulfil necessary clerical duties under the support and supervision of a RN and/or ODP.
* Provide flexible cover for any clinical area specified within your competency level.
* Assist in the restocking of supplies and maintenance of equipment as directed.
* Adhere to departmental and directorate procedures for the use of supplies and equipment to promote efficiency.
* Keep clinical areas clean, tidy and maintain a safe, pleasant environment.
* Ensure nursing/theatre documentation is maintained to Trust standards, including electronic records.
* Participate in nursing/anaesthetic audit under supervision to achieve agreed standards.
* Contribute to setting goals and benchmarking standards of care under the supervision of the Theatre/Anaesthetic Co‑ordinator.
* Collaborate with staff to develop and maintain a departmental philosophy and model of care.
* Demonstrate a holistic approach to patient care, grounded in evidence‑based practice.
* Apply Trust policies, procedures, guidelines and standards and seek guidance where necessary.
* Identify and report clinical risks in accordance with the Trust risk management policy.
* Provide a suitable and safe environment for the physical, psychological and spiritual wellbeing of staff, patients, and relatives/carers.
* Record and report incidents/complaints involving staff, patients and visitors following West Middlesex policies and assist in investigations.
* Promote a healthy lifestyle for patients and staff, supporting national strategy requirements.
Communication & Professional Conduct
* Demonstrate politeness, courtesy and sensitivity in dealings with patients, clients, visitors, relatives and colleagues, maintaining good customer relations.
* Carry out assigned clerical tasks as directed.
* Report untoward incidents and any other relevant information to a RN/ODP immediately.
* Do not undertake duties beyond your competency or training; inform a RN/ODP if concerned.
* Share good practice within the department and across the Trust.
* Promote a positive image of the Trust and West Middlesex University Hospital at all times.
* Work cohesively with all theatre team members to ensure the best services for patients.
* Communicate responsively and inclusively, adjusting tone and content to the recipient’s level of understanding and any barriers such as language or culture.
Human Resources Management
* Manage your annual leave in line with Trust and local policy and procedure.
* Maintain, update and develop personal and professional knowledge and skills through the Trust’s 1:1 process and PDP development.
* Participate in the programme for clinical supervision as required.
* Maintain a personal professional profile, identifying role and skill development in line with the Scope of Professional Practice.
Financial Responsibility
* Work with the operating team to ensure effective use of resources.
Policy Development
* Assist on delegated projects relating to local policy development under the supervision of the theatre/anaesthetic co‑ordinator.
* Implement Trust policies and procedures at department level, reinforcing their use.
* Promote a healthy lifestyle for patients and staff in line with national strategy requirements.
Service Development
* Assist theatre teams and contribute to the development and maintenance of a positive learning environment for colleagues, patients and visitors.
* Continuously update knowledge, skills and competencies, undertaking further training where opportunities arise.
Information Management
* Maintain data quality on Surginet and intraoperative documentation within the CERNER electronic patient record system.
* Undergo relevant training for electronic information systems.
* Order relevant tests and access results reported on CERNER in accordance with Trust and local guidelines.
* Collect audit and research data as required.
