To provide clinical leadership and carry continuing responsibility for the Labour Ward, maternity triage/triage line and Obstetric Theatres on a 24-hour basis across the Health Board In collaboration with the Lead Obstetrician, Neonatologist and Anaesthetist.

Ensure the Quality and Safety requirements of the environment are maintained at a high level. In particular, the standards required by NICE, Welsh Risk Pool, RCOG, towards safer childbirth.

The post-holder will ensure intrapartum care across the Health Board is fully integrated. 

To demonstrate clinical leadership and direction enabling a culture of learning and effectiveness

The post-holder will be a source of expert clinical knowledge for the labour ward and maternity triage/ triage line teams, this occasionally involving clinical work.

Main duties of the job

The post- holder will responsibility to contribute to the support and development of all staff within the multi-professional team.

The post holder will act as a resource for all professionals in relation to intrapartum care within the obstetric unit

Have a responsibility to promote and maximise normal childbirth, liaising closely with the Consultant Midwife for Normal Childbirth.

Assist the Deputy Head of Midwifery in the development of policies/procedures in performance, risk management and health and safety in the defined clinical area.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will provide clinical leadership for the Labour Ward and Obstetric Theatres on a 24-hour basis across the Health Board in collaboration with the Lead Obstetrician, Neonatologist and Anaesthetist as it relates to the delivery of safe intrapartum care. Operational management of the area and staff remains the responsibility of the ward manager and matron. Ensure the Quality and Safety requirements of the environment are maintained at a high level. In particular, the standards required by NICE, Welsh Risk Pool, RCOG, towards safer childbirth and in the course of their duties;

1. Ensure intrapartum care across the Health Board is fully integrated.
2. Demonstrate clinical leadership and direction enabling a culture of learning and effectiveness.
3. Undertake clinical shifts on a weekly basis to ensure skills are maintained and to accessible to the women and their families
4. Contribute to the support and development of all staff within the
multi professional team.
5. Act as a resource for all professionals in relation to intrapartum care within the obstetric unit.
6. Promote and maximise normal childbirth, liaising closely with the Consultant Midwife for Normal Childbirth.
7. Work with Obstetric Consultant colleagues to develop and monitor integrated care pathways and management plans for high-risk care.

8. Educated to Degree level
9. Evidence of recent CPD Knowledge of Safeguarding Adults/Children including the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards
10. Knowledge of quality and service improvement methodologies
