Overview
CAN Geotechnical, part of the RSK Group, is looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join their team in Chesterfield. This is a full-time permanent role.
This is an excellent opportunity for candidates with a degree in mechanical engineering to work with a contractor who designs and manufactures their own equipment. The equipment ranges from lightweight aluminium access platforms to excavator and slope-mounted drilling rigs. We are not looking for a theoretical engineer; we want a person who can apply their knowledge to real world scenarios and quickly move from concept to product in an energetic but carefully considered manner as part of a small but friendly and enthusiastic team.
The role will be office based, but time will also be spent in the manufacturing workshop (on the same premises) reviewing prototype designs, troubleshooting and further refining the equipment. There will also be the opportunity to review, test and use designed equipment on site.
Responsibilities
* Be at the forefront of equipment design for difficult access slope stabilisation drilling equipment and rope access support.
* Develop entirely new designs from concepts into detailed design in SolidWorks, moving to prototyping parts and new assemblies, ultimately producing manufacturable solutions.
* Work closely with the operations teams and key suppliers to ensure equipment design is optimised for use and manufacture.
* Translate 3D modelling of parts to 2D manufacturing drawings in SolidWorks.
* Work on continual improvement of existing equipment through design optimisation.
* Complete design calculations and FEA to inform strength and safety of components and suitability of equipment.
Person Specification
* Bachelors degree in mechanical engineering
* Minimum 2+ years’ experience in a similar role
* Strong aptitude for 3D and 2D CAD
* Good understanding of FEA and hand calculations
* Familiar with a workshop environment
* Driving licence preferred
