A Tech Lead and Engineering Manager is required at the University of Cambridge Information Services division. This hybrid, Cambridge-based role leads a team of 50 engineers building and modernising cloud‑native services used by about 60,000 staff, researchers and students worldwide.
Key responsibilities include modernising existing applications, delivering high‑quality software on Google Cloud, and maintaining a scalable, secure and maintainable codebase. You will mentor and manage a cross‑functional team, prioritise work, and engage with stakeholders to transform business requirements into robust technical solutions.

Key Skills & Experience
* Modern software development, testing and ops practices – keeping knowledge current.
* Expertise in managing software requirements, priorities and dependencies.
* Architecting web applications, including API design, with a focus on maintainability, stability, security and clean code.
* Integrating multiple applications via APIs, event buses, asynchronous tasks, etc.
* Packaging web applications in Docker containers.
* Testing frameworks and best practices.
* GitLab or similar CI/CD platforms.
* Creating CI pipelines for building and testing web applications.
* Creating CD pipelines for deploying web applications to the cloud using Terraform.
* Experience with Google Cloud or similar cloud providers.
* Collaborative cross‑product and cross‑team architecture decisions.
* Driving technical architecture, standards and process improvements.
* Strong experience managing agile cross‑functional teams with a DevOps approach.
* Managing, training and mentoring a team of engineers.

* Ensure team motivation, performance and adherence to current practices.
* Manage priorities, support scrum tasks such as scheduling, backlog grooming and dependency management.
* Understand and support product/service needs, develop strategies to meet requirements.
* Perform competitive analysis and identify strengths and weaknesses of potential solutions.
* Develop business cases for proposed new features, products or services.
You will be part of a team of Tech Leads and Engineering Managers reporting to the Head of Development and Operations (DevOps).
