Overview
Provide general and specialist nursing care to soldiers and civilians while working in a range of locations. You can join as a soldier or an officer, when you are fully trained or while you are a student nurse. Army Nurses can work in NHS hospitals within a Joint Hospital Group or in ground-based environments such as medical regiments and field hospitals. Nursing personnel deal with all types of medical situations, including caring for civilian and military patients in the UK and military casualties of war and conflict. The role may involve travel, Adventurous Training and sport for the Army, with rewards including a competitive salary, non-contributory pension and free healthcare.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide general and specialist nursing care to soldiers and civilians
* Manage daily patient caseload on a ward within a Joint Hospital Group
* On operations, work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, often alongside other multinational forces
* Have the flexibility to work in a modern UK hospital or the more challenging conditions of a field hospital overseas

Student Nurse (Soldier)
UCAS tariff points: 120 from A/AS level (Scotland requires Advanced Highers and Highers), plus 3 GCSEs Grades 9–4/A-C (or Scottish National A-C) including Maths, English (Literature or Language) and a Science. If you do not have A/AS levels, UCAS tariff points may be accepted from other Level 3 routes.

Student Nurse (Officer)
If you have a Student Nurse university place, are applying through UCAS, or are part way through training you may be eligible for an Army Nursing Bursary. You will join as a Nursing Officer once you qualify. You must pass the Army Officer Selection Board and the Arms Selection Board for QARANC for professionally qualified officers.
Adult Nurse
You must be registered with the NMC. You can join as a newly qualified nurse, be in your final year of training (leading to NMC registration) or join with prior nursing experience. You choose whether to join as a Soldier or Officer after qualification. To join as a Nursing Soldier you must pass the Assessment Centre tests for QARANC; to join as a Nursing Officer you must pass the Army Officer Selection Board and the Arms Selection Board for QARANC.

Training for the role

Joining as a Registered Nurse
You will command a team delivering high-quality care. You can join as an Officer or Soldier; both paths develop clinical and leadership abilities. Soldiers follow a regular nursing career pathway, while Officers take on additional leadership and management responsibilities alongside nursing duties. Army Nursing offers rigorous military and professional training, with opportunities for further study up to MSc level funded by the Army. We will support you in making the right career choice between Nursing Soldier or Nursing Officer.
Training
* Step 1 – Join the Army and complete initial Soldier or Officer military training.
* Step 2 – Complete a Transition to Military Practice Course, then be assigned to a Joint Hospital Group to begin preceptorship and rotation as an Army Nurse.
Bonus
Golden Hello If you hold a recognised specialist qualification in Emergency, Intensive Care or Burns and Plastics you may be eligible for a £30,000 bonus on completion of military training.
Joining as a Student Nurse (Soldier)
You will complete a three-year degree program leading to NMC registration. You will be supported by military and civilian university staff at the Defence School of Healthcare Education with Birmingham City University, and will be employed as a Registered Nurse by the Army. After qualifying, you will wear the rank of Acting Corporal and rotate within a Joint Hospital Group to develop in acute practice.
Training
* Step 1 – Join the Army as a Soldier and complete Phase 1 Training before starting university.
* Step 2 – After university, complete a Transition to Military Practice Course and be assigned to a Joint Hospital Group as an Army Nurse.
Joining as a Student Nurse (Officer)
If you are in student nurse training or about to begin an Adult Health training pathway with a guaranteed university place, you may apply for an Army Nursing Bursary worth up to £42,000. This provides £5,000 per year of training. After completing your student nursing course and officer training, you will join the Army as a Registered Nurse, continuing to develop in a Joint Hospital Group.

You may specialise in areas including Primary Health Care (to Advanced Practice), Emergency Nursing (to Advanced Practice), Critical Care, Burns and Plastics, Trauma and Orthopaedics, Sexual Health, General Medicine and General Surgery, with opportunities for ongoing professional development up to and beyond MSc level.

Adult Nurse Soldier
Earn £26,334 during initial training; pay increases after joining your unit.
Adult Nurse Officer
Salary during training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst is £34,676, with commissioning on a minimum of £41,456 per year depending on experience.
Student Nurse (Soldier)
Earn £26,334 during initial training; pay increases upon qualification and first posting.
