Technician - Biochemistry Student And Academic Services Student & Academic Support Grade 5 - £27,319 to £31,236 per annum (pro rata) depending on experience Technical Operations, Resources and Services (TORS) is a large cross-university team providing specialist technical support for teaching, research, and commercial activities at Sheffield Hallam University. The Science and Technology (S&T) technical team supports laboratory-based activities across a range of disciplines. We are recruiting a technician to primarily support practical activities within the School of Biosciences and Chemistry, but also to support other areas of the University laboratory areas as required. In this role you would directly support laboratory-based activities including under-graduate and post-graduate practical classes and student research projects and other practical teaching. Laboratory and chemical safety knowledge is essential for this post, and you will need to have relevant practical experience and knowledge of biochemical techniques, with proficiency gained from method development and troubleshooting. Relevant experience includes setting up enzyme assays, poly acrylamide gel electrophoresis (denaturing and native), Western blotting, EIA, protein extraction/purification/separation. You will be expected to work flexibly and have, or develop, skills to allow you to support delivery in other disciplines such as molecular biology and mammalian cell culture. You will work closely with team members and will be expected to work flexibly and have, or develop, skills to allow you to support S&T delivery across a range of disciplines. You will be highly motivated and meticulous in your work, with a professional work ethic, and ability to work both independently and collaboratively across team boundaries sharing knowledge and skills to ensure customer-focussed results. ** Please note this role is part-time, 0.6FTE, and the days are fixed as Wednesday, Thursday and Friday ** and opportunities to pursue a rewarding and fulfilling career in a supportive environment. You will be contractually enrolled into the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) – one of the largest and most generous defined benefit pension schemes in the country. Each year you will earn a secure pension benefit of 1/49th of your salary and the University will pay pension contributions towards the cost of this pension (currently worth about 21% of your salary). For a starting salary of £27,181, for example, the University would pay just over £5,600 in the first year of your employment and you would earn a pension of £555 p.a. for that year (payable from your State Pension Age).
