Consultant Ophthalmologist - Vitreoretinal Surgery

Job overview: The successful candidate will assume a direct clinical role within the department, sharing facilities with the existing consultants. This is a substantive post (10 PAs) and the appointee will join 32 Consultant Ophthalmologist posts. The successful candidate will work 10 PAs a week, including an 8 DCC and 2 SPA split (flexible working may be considered). It is expected that the appointee will participate in the consultant on-call rota for VR (currently 1:4, with a plan to move to 1:5). Most vitreoretinal work is undertaken at Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (HUTH), with one outpatient VR clinic in Grimsby per week anticipated.

Main duties of the job
In conjunction with colleagues, the Consultant will:
i. Provide vitreo-retinal clinics and theatre
ii. Provide an ophthalmic service in accordance with the agreed timetable and job plan
iii. Provide 1 in 4 on-call cover for Hull Royal Infirmary
iv. Supervise and help train colleagues including trainees and allied health professionals
v. Assist with advice and management of emergency patients along with the on-call team when needed
vi. Work flexibly to provide adequate cover for colleagues to ensure smooth running of the service

Person specification

Professional Registration

* Full GMC registration
* Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via one of the following:
* Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) (the proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of the interview)
* Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) Where not available then commitment to work towards CESR competencies will be required

Qualifications And Training

* FRCOphth or equivalent

Desirable criteria

* Postgraduate degree: e.g. MD, PhD; postgraduate qualification in education or significant experience in postgraduate training

Clinical Experience

* Competent vitreoretinal and cataract surgeon
* Fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery

Management and Administration Experience

* Ability to manage and lead medical/surgical teams
* Ability to lead on smooth and efficient running of the unit
* Ability to organise, prioritise and manage high-intensity workload

Teaching, Audit and Research

* Experience of supervising junior medical staff
* Commitment to formal and informal teaching of medical staff, AHPs and medical students
* Evidence of participation in audit
* Ability to apply clinical research evidence to patient care

Personal Attributes

* Ability to work flexibly in a changing health service
* Excellent manner with patients, sensitive to their needs and fears
* Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, GPs, nurses and other health professionals; adapt style as appropriate
* Willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional and national levels
