Description Job Description Are you looking for an opportunity to work with experts who advise Scottish Ministers on reducing poverty and inequality, and on how to deliver the First Minister’s top priority of eradicating child poverty? You will join as a key part of the secretariat for the Poverty and Inequality Commission, an advisory Non Departmental Public Body which provides independent advice and scrutiny to Scottish Ministers on poverty and inequality. It is made up of a Chair and eight members who between them have a range of experience and expertise relating to poverty and inequality, including academic, delivery, and lived experience expertise. You will also support the Experts by Experience Panel, made up of people from across Scotland with lived experience of poverty, which works with the Commission in developing its advice and scrutiny. The Commission is supported by a committed secretariat, staffed by Scottish Government civil servants. This role will require you to work flexibly and draw on a range of evidence to provide advice and briefing for the Commission. You will have the opportunity to work closely with experts in the field and to gain a unique perspective on policy and delivery, and on working with Ministers and the Scottish Parliament. Responsibilities Prepare advice and papers on policy issues for the Commission, and its working groups, to enable it to deliver its work programme. Work independently to research and understand complex policy topics and to make appropriate connections with external stakeholders and officials working in Scottish Government. Work with Commissioners, draft consultation responses on the Commission’s behalf for key audiences; and provide direct support and briefing to the Commission Chair, and other Commissioners, in their external engagements, such as giving evidence to Parliamentary committees and speaking at events. Manage the Commission’s current contract for external communications support, and lead on procurement for a new contract for 2026. Lead on records management, Freedom of Information requests, and the Commission’s Risk Register. Line manage the Commission’s Administrator. Contribute as needed to the wider work of the secretariat, including preparing contributions for Commission reports and supporting the work of the Experts by Experience Panel. This role can be based at Atlantic Quay as well as St Andrew’s House with the team being split across both these locations. There is expectation to travel through to Edinburgh/Glasgow once a month so the whole team can work together in person.
