The City of Doncaster Council is a confident, ambitious organisation which puts improving the life of its residents at the centre of everything we do. You have a opportunity to be part of this in the role of Assistant Psychologist.

The post-holder will work within EPIC Learning, which is an alternative learning provision to support young people who have been excluded from mainstream school. This will provide a unique insight into working with young people who have experienced invalidating and traumatic environments. They will support the integration of psychologically informed thinking within existing pathways of this education provision.

EPIC Learning is part of Team EPIC the innovative Youth Crime Prevention Service.

EPIC an acronym for Encouraging Potential Inspiring Change has, in partnership with The City of Doncaster Council, developed an alternative learning provision to support small groups of young people (up to 8 young people per cohort split into 2 groups) who are often disengaged from education and have been/ are at risk of exclusion from mainstream school for challenging, anti-social and criminal behaviours. EPIC's background in Youth Crime Prevention highlighted the correlation between young people who are excluded and those that enter the criminal justice system. Our young people are aged 10-16yrs.

The project supports young people in our short-term provision, using experiential learning with a focus on assessment and intervention. The project is also supported by a Lead Teacher, Project Lead, 2 Learning Mentors and Speech and Language Therapist. The EPIC Learning team work on a relationship-based practice model using a trauma informed approach. The project aims to prevent young people from being permanently excluded from mainstream school as well as prevent them from entering the criminal justice system and further offending. During the package of support provided, information will be gained for the young person to be re-integrated back into school as part of a bespoke transition plan.

The key role will be to complete a psychological profile assessment of each young person open to EPIC Learning, including the completion of a cognitive assessment and various psychometric assessments. The post holder will also facilitate group based, and where required 1:1, interventions to young people attending EPIC Learning, having the opportunity to gain experience in using different psychological models (e.g., CBT, Motivational interviewing and DBT). There will also be the opportunity to provide psycho-education sessions for clients and provide staff training to support cohesive communication and integration of psychological models and knowledge.

The role of the assistant will assist the MDT with the development of psychological case formulations, which inform enhanced risk assessments and intervention plans. The role will be clinically supervised via the psychology service, whilst day to day line management will be provided via EPIC Learning management.

The team is looking for an enthusiastic, robust, committed individual who has a keen interest in working with complex and challenging young people. The role may require travel across the South Yorkshire region.

Within this role you will have the opportunity to work in a flexible and dynamic way to meet the needs of this challenging client group. Development of clinical skills will also be supported. Furthermore, under the supervision of the psychology service, the post-holder may have the opportunity in supporting in the delivery of teaching and training to partner agency staff, across the Young People's Service. There will also be the opportunity to work within the psychology service and pick up a wider range of work during school holidays when the EPIC Learning role is quieter. There will also be the requirement to support the psychology service's Harmful Sexual Behaviours advice line and there may be the opportunity to undertake direct work in relation to young people who display Harmful Sexual Behaviours.

The post-holder will be provided with opportunities to expand their experience with conducting audits, collection and analysis of statistics, development of audit and/or research projects and clinically related administration.

Within this role, the post-holder will be required to aid in building confidence, independence, resilience and role model appropriate interventions with the young people being supporting.

The post-holder will be required to attend and contribute to a variety of multiagency meetings relating to young people, including writing professional reports when requested.

The successful candidate must have experience of working with young people who may present with highly challenging behaviours, which at times can be stressful. Our young people may have diagnosed or underlying additional needs so the right candidate would need to be prepared to work flexibly to meet the needs of young people and support information gathering.
