Offer description

Overview

Mechanical Engineering Graduate Programme at Babcock. Location: HM Naval Base Clyde, Scotland. Application closing date: 16 October 2025. Programme start date: September 2026. Role ID: 66910. Salary: Minimum £35,000. Salary is dependent on location, role and qualifications.

What you will do

Join our Mechanical Engineering Graduate Programme, and you’ll have the opportunity to work on some of the UK’s most impactful engineering projects. Contribute to engineering solutions that help safeguard tomorrow while developing the technical expertise and leadership skills needed to thrive in your career. You’ll support work across the engineering lifecycle – from technology innovation and concept design to production, commissioning, in-service support, and decommissioning. Projects may include designing cutting-edge submarines, converting military vehicles, refurbishing ships, or advancing next-generation nuclear power plants that support the UK’s net-zero goals. You’ll work alongside a global network of engineers, technicians, and specialists to help ensure the safety, reliability, and performance of critical national infrastructure. You may lead design reviews, oversee stress analysis, or manage the integration of mechanical systems into high-performance platforms.

How the programme is structured

Over two years, you’ll rotate through placements every three to six months, exploring a variety of projects and teams. Some placements may involve different locations, helping you build your professional network and understand how the business operates. You’ll build a strong foundation in mechanical engineering while gradually taking on greater responsibilities, such as leading small teams and overseeing projects. As you progress, you’ll align placements with your interests and career goals to gain relevant experience in areas that matter to you.

Development and support

From day one, you’ll receive structured support, personalised training, and dedicated mentorship. You’ll join our Graduate Development Programme with expert-led masterclasses on communication, personal branding, resilience, and wellbeing. To support your journey toward Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status, we offer guidance and cover related fees.

Rewards and benefits

In addition to a minimum starting salary of £35,000, you’ll receive a comprehensive package to support your development, wellbeing, and life outside of work. Benefits include:

* A minimum of 25 days of holiday plus bank holidays, with agile working options subject to discussion with your manager
* Generous pension and employee share schemes
* Flexible benefits, including cycle to work scheme, discounts
* Wellbeing support, including Employee Assistance Programme, digital GP service, and health checks

There are also opportunities to take part in STEM outreach activities and volunteering.

What you need to apply

* Engineering degrees in Mechanical, Structural, Materials, Motorsport, Mechatronics, Engine Systems and Welding. Preference for degrees accredited by the relevant institution.
* Security clearance requirements: BPSS and Security Check (SC) clearance. Some programmes may be subject to Security Vetting restrictions. Details at United Kingdom Security Vetting: clearance levels - GOV.UK.

Where you will be based

Places on the Autumn 2026 Mechanical Engineering graduate programme are available at HM Naval Base Clyde in Scotland. You’ll support the Royal Navy’s Vanguard and Astute-Class submarines, contributing to planning, maintenance, and training to keep critical defence systems operating safely. Placements at other sites across the UK may be possible. Agile working is supported, but you’ll be expected to work on-site several days a week. Relocation may be required and arrangements will consider your personal circumstances.
