About the role

Make a difference to every child’s future

Dorset Council is seeking a passionate and skilled Advisory Teacher for Children and Young People with Visual Impairment (CYP VI) to join our specialist Vision Support Service.

This is a rewarding opportunity to work in a peripatetic role, supporting children and young people from early diagnosis through to post‑16, helping them achieve independence, inclusion, and success in education and beyond.

You will work collaboratively with schools, families, and multi‑agency professionals, providing specialist advice, teaching, and support to ensure the best outcomes for children with visual impairment.


You will:

* manage a caseload of children and young people with visual impairment, including those with complex additional needs
* provide specialist teaching, advice and training to schools, SENCOs, and support staff
* support families, including those with children below statutory school age
* carry out functional vision and learning media assessments
* develop and monitor individual support programmes and outcomes
* advise on and support the use of specialist equipment and assistive technology
* teach braille and promote access to the expanded core curriculum
* work closely with education, health, and social care professionals
* contribute to training, awareness raising, and workforce development

This role involves travel across Dorset and working in a range of environments including schools, homes, and community settings.


What we’re looking for


You must have:

* qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
* mandatory Qualification in Visual Impairment (or willingness to train)
* experience working with children and young people with visual impairment
* the ability to teach braille
* a strong knowledge of eye conditions and their educational impact
* understanding of assessment, monitoring, and evidence‑based interventions
* excellent communication and interpersonal skills
* commitment to inclusive education
* full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle

Further Information

This is a full time role at 32.5 hours per week.

This post requires significant travel. You must have a vehicle (or transport we deem suitable) available for use as needed.
