About the Role
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and experienced Specialist Speech and Language Therapist to join our Community Neuro and Stroke Team within Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust. This post offers the chance to work as part of a dynamic, forward‑thinking interdisciplinary team, delivering specialist assessment and intervention for adults with neurological conditions both acquired and progressive in a variety of community settings across Ashton, Wigan and Leigh. You will provide a high standard of evidence‑based, client‑centred care for individuals with complex communication and swallowing needs following stroke or other neurological events. Working collaboratively within the Integrated Care System (ICS) model, you will liaise with multidisciplinary professionals, voluntary agencies, patients and families to optimise outcomes and support independence.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
* Provide comprehensive assessment, differential diagnosis, and intervention for adults with communication and/or swallowing disorders resulting from neurological conditions.
* Manage a defined caseload, using evidence‑based practice and person‑centred care principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate treatment.
* Work across community and home‑based settings, ensuring interventions take place in the most appropriate environment for the patient.
* Support and educate patients, relatives and carers to promote understanding of conditions and treatment goals.
* Contribute to goal setting within an interdisciplinary framework, ensuring collaborative working with physiotherapists, occupational therapists, psychologists, nurses and rehabilitation assistants.
* Supervise, support and appraise junior staff, rehabilitation facilitators, and students on clinical placement, helping to foster a culture of learning and professional development.
* Take responsibility for accurate and comprehensive record‑keeping, in line with HCPC and RCSLT professional standards and Trust policy.
* Participate in service development, clinical audit and quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient experience and outcomes.
* Provide teaching, training and advice to other professionals, service users and carers on the role and contribution of speech and language therapy in neurorehabilitation.
About You
We are looking for a motivated, flexible and compassionate clinician who is passionate about working with adults with neurological conditions. You have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to motivate, educate and empower patients and colleagues alike.
Essential Criteria
* Degree or equivalent qualification in Speech and Language Therapy
* HCPC registration
* Experience working with adults with acquired neurological conditions (e.g. stroke, TBI, progressive neurological disease)
* Knowledge of evidence‑based interventions and best practice within neurological rehabilitation
* Strong clinical reasoning and problem‑solving skills
* Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team
* Commitment to ongoing professional development and reflective practice
Desirable Criteria
* Experience in a community or interdisciplinary rehabilitation setting
* Post‑graduate training in dysphagia management
* Supervision or mentoring experience
