Equans is looking for a Trainee Quantity Surveyor to join our team! Our office is based in Dudley and we have sites covering the West Midlands. This is a full time role with a competitive salary plus benefits package.
We are looking for someone keen to start their career within construction at Equans. You will have either recently completed a construction related degree or be willing to work towards one.
Your role will be working on site alongside our operational team where you will learn first hand our business. To support you in your learning you will be engaging with our trainee programme where you will be given one day of study per week.
Here at Equans we work on sites across the West Midlands therefore it is preferable you have a full clean UK driving license or actively working towards one.
What will you deliver?
As a trainee, you will be introduced to the key principles and practices of quantity surveying within the construction industry, providing essential support to senior quantity surveyors while developing your skills in the field. This role offers an excellent opportunity for someone eager to build a career in construction, gain hands‑on experience, and work towards becoming a fully qualified Quantity Surveyor.
You will work closely with experienced professionals, assisting in various stages of project development, from pre‑construction through to completion, and be involved in activities such as cost estimation, contract administration, and project management.
* Assist the QS with commercial administration across multiple live and pre‑construction projects.
* Gather and prepare subcontract procurement information and documentation.
* Support subcontractor selection, procurement scheduling, and contract issuance.
* Manage monthly applications, subcontractor accounts, and ensure compliance with legal obligations.
* Review subcontractor accounts and assist with payment applications and final accounts to prevent delays.
* Monitor costs, report on budgets, and support cost control measures.
* Track project progress, submit valuations, and oversee retention releases and payments.
* Assist with take‑offs, BOQs, scope of work schedules, and cost estimates.
* Measure work levels monthly to support payment applications.
* Help procure materials and identify cost‑saving opportunities.
* Provide estimating teams with accurate information for tendering.
* Support finance, accounts, and estimating teams in maintaining budget accuracy.
* Perform general administrative duties as needed.
* Ensure workplace safety for yourself and others.
* Maintain professional communication with stakeholders.
* Be flexible to travel between sites and head offices.
* Undertake any other reasonable management requests.

Who are we looking for?
* A minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C), including Mathematics and English.
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and general IT competence.
* Excellent numeracy and verbal communication skills.
* Ability to balance work and study commitments effectively.
* Enrolment in or willingness to undertake a 5-year university apprenticeship degree programme.
* Experience in a surveying role and knowledge of the construction industry, including health and safety practices.
* Construction-based BTEC or NVQ, achieved or in progress.
* HND/HNC Level in a relevant construction-related course, achieved or in progress.
