Blackpool is Britain's premier holiday resort with a 333,000 resident population and up to 16 million visitors per year. Surrounding the town is the rural Fylde, with excellent housing and schools. There are good motorway, rail and air links to Manchester, Liverpool and the English Lake District, all within a 1-hour drive, and London and Scotland within 3 hours.
The Trust includes the Lancashire Cardiac Unit, a tertiary referral centre. The district has the highest elderly population (21.4% aged 65 or over) in the North-Western Region, leading to a higher prevalence of age-related eye diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration. A sub-regional AMD treatment service is provided (PDT and anti-VEGF).

* Outpatient work will be conducted at BVH in a dedicated Ophthalmic Suite and within the Ophthalmic Surgical and Medical Retina Units.
* A community visual screening program for children is carried out by Orthoptists, with close liaison with the Diabetic Eye Screening program and a developing diabetic service within the Medical Retina Unit.
* There is a close relationship with local optometrists providing various eye care services, and an independent sector provider delivering glaucoma reviews and minor eye condition services.
