Role Overview
The Property Solicitor role is part of the Property team within our Legal Services Department in Southern Water ("the Company"). The Property team supports the Company to manage a diverse property portfolio which includes operational waste and water sites, offices, grazing land, housing, renewable energy projects, environmental projects and telecommunications apparatus. It helps to maintain and enhance the value of the company’s estate and its income over the long term. This includes dealing with the acquisition and disposal of property and land, in addition to managing a lettings portfolio.
The role forms part of the small but specialist Legal Property team within the Company. Based at our Durrington office, the post provides in‑house conveyancing services for the acquisition and disposal of property and assets for the Company’s purposes, on a timely basis and protecting the Company’s interests.
Key Responsibilities
* Deliver, manage and develop the Company’s conveyancing provision and process.
* Minimise risk in accordance with Company strategy and in compliance with legal, statutory, and regulatory requirements and to ensure the protection of the Company’s current and future interests in land.
* Produce all legal documentation required in accordance with those requirements.
* Actively promote and pursue SW’s core policies, ensuring excellent customer relations are maintained and processes are improved to enhance customer satisfaction.
* Deal with third parties and stakeholders such as property owners, developers, external solicitors and HMLR.
* Maintain key interfaces with internal customers and stakeholders, providing a key service of expertise and developing and maintaining good relationships with excellent communication skills.
Qualifications and Experience
* Solicitor or Legal Executive with circa 5 years' PQE and previous commercial property experience.
* Previous commercial property experience is ideal.
* Previous utility company experience would be advantageous but not essential.
* Previous property litigation experience and agricultural law would be a plus.
* Knowledge of the Water Industry Act 1991 would be nice to have.
* Strong commercial awareness.
* Proven understanding of cross‑business impacts.
* Excellent planning, organisational and time‑management skills.
