Head Gardener (Live Out) Vacancy
An attractive opportunity has arisen for a proactive, passionate Head Gardener to take the lead in maintaining and enhancing the gardens and grounds of a beautiful private country estate, tucked away in a semi-rural location just 15 minutes from Henley-on-Thames. This role would suit an experienced and qualified Head or Senior Gardener with exceptional horticultural knowledge, strong garden management skills, and proven supervisory experience.
The estate’s traditional English country gardens cover 5 to 6 acres within a wider 56-acre property, featuring formal, walled, sunken, and kitchen gardens, along with cut flower beds, soft fruits, and an impressive greenhouse. The successful applicant will take responsibility for these key areas, working with a range of gardening machinery and ensuring the gardens are presented to the highest standard throughout the year.
Working closely with the family, the Head Gardener will contribute ideas and inspiration to long-term plans designed to refresh and revive the grounds, delivering projects that enhance both the beauty and functionality of the gardens. Excellent communication skills are essential, as is the ability to work collaboratively with the wider estate team to ensure planting schemes are delivered successfully.
Applicants should bring extensive horticultural expertise, ideally supported by recognised qualifications, and demonstrate a track record of success in similar roles within private estates or horticulturally diverse public gardens.
Strong technical skills and excellent plant knowledge are essential, as is practical experience with a range of tools and machinery including strimmers, lawnmowers, hedge trimmers, and chainsaws. A spraying certificate would be an advantage, though not essential. Candidates must be energetic, physically fit, and able to work independently, with a high level of attention to detail and pride in their work.
The role can be offered on a full-time or part-time basis, and applicants should have their own transport, a clean driving licence, and be able to provide three years of contactable references. Non-smokers are preferred.
This is a wonderful opportunity to join a small, friendly team and make a real, long-term impact on one of Oxfordshire’s most beautiful private gardens.
