About the role

You will be part of the Main Magnet Power Supplies team, providing operational support for the AC and DC Power systems which drive the main steering and focussing magnets on the ISIS synchrotron.

The role includes preventative and reactive maintenance of the power supplies and fault diagnosis and repair. There will also be involvement in projects to upgrade and replace obsolete equipment.

You will need to understand electrical circuit theory and component level electronics and have at least a basic understanding of power electronics. You should also be comfortable working with power supplies and systems operating at mains voltage and above with power levels in the hundreds of kilowatts.

You will be expected to work with more experienced engineers and technicians to grow into the role. As you gain experience of the workplace and equipment you will be expected to accept more responsibility, eventually taking ownership of tasks and equipment. This will lead you to taking the initiative when necessary. Following your interests there are great opportunities to expand your knowledge and skill set at STFC.

Key responsibilities

As part of the main-magnet power supply team your duties will include:

* Problem solving, fault-finding and repair of equipment.
* Periodic adjustment of equipment.
* Assistance with operation of equipment.
* Installation and commissioning of new equipment.
* Working with multidisciplinary teams of engineers, technicians, and scientists.
* Undertaking training as required for your role.
* Management of health and safety, both your own and that of others, including carrying out risk assessments and complying with codes of practice etc.
* Contributing to design and development of new equipment.
* Participate in the On-Call roster.

The work involves hazards such as high voltages, ionising radiation, and high magnetic fields. You will be willing and able to work with these hazards and comply with control measures put in place to protect yourself and others.

You will be expected to travel occasionally, both in the UK and abroad as part of the role.

About you

The below will be reviewed at either at shortlisting (S) and or Interview (I) stage:

* You will have a degree in either electrical or electrical and electronic engineering, or be able to demonstrate that you have acquired equivalent knowledge through experience and other training, e.g. by having achieved IEng. (S)
* You will have experience working as an electrical or electronic engineer in a technical environment gained (post-graduation if you have a degree). (S&I)
* You will also be able to demonstrate experience of maintenance, fault-diagnosis, and repair. (S&I)
* You should be able to identify appropriate techniques and methods of undertaking engineering tasks to which you have been assigned. (I)
* Ability to effectively communicate with others, at all levels. (I)
* Demonstrable personal and social skills towards a multidisciplinary team. (I)
* You will be able to demonstrate that you understand and comply with relevant codes of conduct. (I)
