Locum Consultant Psychiatrist in Adult Community Psychiatry - C&H

Apply to the Locum Consultant Psychiatrist in Adult Community Psychiatry - C&H role at East London NHS Foundation Trust. The service base is a central community clinic that houses all our Neighbourhood Teams, the Early Intervention Service, and the Early Detection of Psychosis Service.


Job Overview

This is 0.6 FTE, covering for maternity leave. You will provide clinical leadership to the Neighbourhood Mental Health Team, working with a multidisciplinary group including senior and junior nurses, social workers, community connectors, support workers, occupational therapists, psychologists, assessment workers and peer‑support workers. You will also advise and train general practitioners to increase their skills in managing common mental health presentations. The team works across primary and secondary community services, aiming to deliver a holistic, assertive service for working‑age adults with severe mental illness.


Responsibilities

* Lead the Neighbourhood Mental Health Team, coordinating care across a band‑7 senior worker, band‑5 community connector, band‑3 support worker, occupational therapist, psychologist, band‑6 assessment worker, and peer‑support worker.
* Provide advice and training to general practitioners to improve management of common mental health presentations.
* Manage the Neighbourhood Recovery Service sub‑teams (East and West), supporting recovery-oriented care and primary care mental health offer.
* Carry out risk assessment and apply evidence‑based interventions for psychosis, mood disorders and comorbidities.
* Engage with service users, carers and colleagues in line with ELFT values: We Care, We Respect, We are Inclusive.
* Participate in quality improvement initiatives and contribute to the Trust’s global reputation for QI.
* Travel between sites as required.


Qualifications

* Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent). Fully registered with the General Medical Council.
* Eligible for inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register (or Specialist Registrar within 6 months of gaining CCT). Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent qualification.
* Approved Clinician status (MHA 2007) or eligibility for it.
* Years of experience as a General Adult Psychiatrist (ST4‑6 or Consultant level) in the last three years.
* Experience and knowledge of psychopharmacology, adult psychiatry community services, and the application of the Mental Health Act.
* Understanding of the social aspects relevant to psychiatry.
* Expertise in risk assessment and evidence‑based interventions.
* Commitment to clinical governance and continuous professional development.
* Strong oral and written communication skills; cultural sensitivity and ability to work with a diverse population.


Desirable Skills and Experience

* Higher degree in a relevant area.
* Knowledge and experience of recovery‑informed service delivery.
* Medical education qualification; experience teaching junior staff and non‑medical mental health professionals.
* Published research or interest in supervising research, audit or QI projects.
* Management, performance and leadership courses.


Personal Skills

* Ability to manage complex workloads and support others.
* Commitment to working with service users in ongoing service development.
* Commitment to continuing professional development.


Physical

Able to travel between sites as required.
